Pouting....re: long weekend getaway

Jaxy's poll reminded me of my disappointment yesterday in regards to a long weekend.

I FINALLY got DH to confirm with his boss to take vacation days Thurs and fri leading up to memorial day weekend. I've been bugging him for months to find a date that works for him. This is really the last weekend until July that we are free.

he got it approved, we got babysitters for the weekend and I went to book our FREE flights to New Orleans.....and it's blacked out...to close to capacity to use reward flights. :(.

I am beyond disappointed! One of my free flights expires next month, so I have to use it! I also had 3 free days at a hotel right in the French quarter a block off Bourbon Street. We were already dreaming of beignets from Cafe Du Monde, a bayou cruise and jazz clubs by night.

frantic, I have also looked into NYC....blacked out. Boston.....blacked out. How sad is it that there is no where else in the Continental US that we want to go? I will be on So Cal for work for 7 days the following week, so I do NOT want to go there. Sigh...

now that OUR weekend alone is not going to happen..I am back trying to convince him to fly to meet me in So Cal and we take the kids to Sea World.

still pouting over the elusive long weekend in NOLA.....

  • that bites!  Can you use more miles to get through the blackout and maybe then buy one ticket and get one free?

  • Nope. It's on Southwest under the old system. No points just a reward ticket anywhere they fly. The new program they have no blackouts and if there is a seat, you can use your points/ reward. They are available to purchase, but it'd be $1250 for the both of us to fly. Free is MUCH better! :). I'm hoping perhaps if I BOOK before it expires, I can still use it and we'll go in September.

  • can you do sat, sun, mon, tues, wed instead?  (switch days off?)

Holiday weekends are always hard to get free flights on.

What about:  San Antonio, Napa, Chicago, Niagara Falls, Vegas, Washington DC, Denver

Although not ideal and the perfect place, is it more about the place or about the idea of getting away together?

  • Is there another airport within driving distance or are all flights blacked out?  It might cost a little bit more for a rental car but you could still have your weekend?

    That was my thought, too.

  • As someone who LOVES, LOVES, LOVES New Orleans, I feel your pain. That really sucks. On the upside, if you go in the fall, the weather is pretty nice. I have been in October and it was fine, and July, and it was WOW ... not so comfortable.

  • I was going to suggest Niagara Falls too. I would fly into Buffalo and then rent a car and spend a few days on the Canadian side. Vegas? Someplace where there is an amusement park like Bush Gardens?

  • Watch pot- can't switch dates since I leave the following Thurs for 7 days. I can't leave the kids for 2 full weeks. :( These dates give me 3 days between trips. I have not been to Niagra Falls, i'll have to check that out. DH is in the wine biz, so Napa is work related for him.

Jaxy, I was in NOLA in June and yeah...super hot and humid. My concern about the falls is hurricane season.

  • That really sucks. :(  I like the Busch Gardens idea myself!  The one in Williamsburg is my fave but Tampa has great animal exhibits if your kids like critters.  Both have excellent roller coasters which is my primary criteria for awesomeness. ;)
