and yet another ammonia post from yours truly

We're in disposables this week because we had a bad ammonia reaction last weekend and DD had a pretty awful ammonia burn from it.

I'm stripping everything as we speak, but ...
I need to prevent that again.

I'm speculating that my issue is not enough detergent (diapers aren't smelling clean).  Therefore, I presume I need to use more detergent.  The question is how much.  I'm sticking with the EFF detergent that I've been using (not changing routines yet again).  I'm currently using 1 tbsp of mix in my hot wash.  How much should I go up to?  2 tbsp?  That's how much I use for my regular clothes.

 Thoughts?

  • According to what Abby's Lane recommends, you should use the full amount if not more...they say that only those with really soft water should use less detergent.  I'm trying it with our tide to get rid of the poop smell but the #1 line hasn't been sufficient yet....

  • I had ammonia stink when DS was in diapers and I was using a WAHM detergent.  I did get it out but then I ditched the microfiber and that helped. I also switched detergents back to Planet.

I did a soak with a little hot water, a scoop of Oxyclean and a gallon of vinegar.  It turns into a super duty disinfectant and gets the diapers super clean.  I let it soak for at least 6 hours.

  • I soaked the offending diapers (my overnights) in a full washer to half cup of borax for a few hours.

    Solved my ammonia problem.

I use Tide and use oxyclean in ever wash.  Tide filled to the #1, just under the actual line.
