Speaking of names....

How do your kids names get slaughtered?  We went for short and simple thinking it would be easy....  NOT!

Luca - Luke, Lucas, Logan, Lucka (like Luck-A)

Lila - Lilah, Lia, Layla, Leelah, Lilly

Urgh!

Re: Speaking of names....

That is hilarious. I am sure she was very confused.

LOL!  Hey, maybe you named him after where he was conceived?

  • One of her old daycare teachers used to always call her Lila but that's really it. So far so good on the mispronunciation.
  • I am blown away by the number of people who mispronounce Georgia. Really? Let's go through the other 49 states. They say Gee or gee uh.

Sadly, I think they'd get it right if we'd butchered the spelling with Jorja.

  • We have had Evan pronounced Even at several places. Really? Who would name their kid Even?

One of my friends named their son Dylan. They have had him called Dy-lon before. LOL.

  • Lucas = Luke = Not too bad

Sean = Sean, except for my 9-year-old niece who couldn't read the traditional spelling - in that case, C-An and a look of confusion. ;)

  • People sometimes just forget Evan's name and think it Ethan...close enough I guess :)

    Eloise = EE-loise, Aloise, Louise

Samuel - so far so good for saying it right. But a couple people have misspelled it! Tongue Tied Samul? Samel? Really?

I get called Julia all the time. I guess it's better than Beulah, but about the same as Viola. Still, Julia? It just happened to me last week at Staples.

Emmy =  Emma ALL THE TIME.  There's always a birthday or christmas gift that has Emma on it.

So far so good for Ally.

  • With Eden we get Ed-In...Hmm.
image Oh Joy to the World!!
  • Alexandra=Alexandria all the time!  People...there is no I in her name!  Or they shorten it to Alex and she just isn't an Alex to me.

I introduce her mostly as Allie now which is her nickname and is easy to pronounce :)

I would say that. It's just my accent. Pretty much anyone from the northeast would say that, I think. It's not a mispronunciation- that's how we say "Garden of..." as well. :)

No issues with DS's name but mine has been butchered my whole life. It's Rae (Ray)ann. I've gotten Renee, Ruthann, Roseann, Rachel, Ree-ann (Reann- as my 5th grade teacher insisted on spelling it) Even Leeann, by another teacher. And then there is my married last name. Really quite easy. It's even in the dictionary, yet people still can't get it. I spell it for them and they also can't apparently comprehend letters, either.

  • Marion = Mare-on, but most common is people thinking it's Maryanne.  Sometimes I introduce her and say her name is "Mary-ON" just so people can hear the difference

With Eliza, people think its either Liza or assume her full name is Elizabeth

  • So far, nothing.  Other than my grandmother calling him Cameron for a few months when he was first born.  She's got dementia, so it wasn't the end of the world.

Oh, and a kid in this class can't say Cooper so he calls in "Pooper" instead.

We could be twins.  On the phone, I get Julia all the time at work.  People are very confused when I spell out my email address...

The only issue we've had with misspelling names is one of DH's relatives told us that "Dylan" is pronounced "Die-lan" and argued with us over the spelling.  I asked if they've ever heard of "Bob Dylan" and pointed out it's the most common spelling.  They also made a pretty racist comment about how we spelled it.  Ugh.

This is part of why Cooper went off our list if we'd had a boy... Our nephew was almost Cooper, and he now has a cousin with the name. Nephew called his cousin Pooper when he was younger. It stuck a bit....

Viv's name hasn't been butchered yet that I've heard. I'm sure our primary issue later will be spelling even though she has the most common spelling.

  • I ordered Madeline a cake for her 2nd birthday and asked them to put "Happy 2nd Birthday Madeline" (even spelled it) when I picked up the cake it said "Happy 2nd Birthday Mageline" ?!?!?!

Her name hasn't been pronounced wrong (yet) but we call her Maddie....just spelled wrong.

  • Mia = She's called Maya a lot.

Micah = Mee-cah.  Michael.  And a ridiculous number of spellings.

And most people think the boy's name is really Manna.  Even after we explain our tradition of nicknaming our children.  They still don't believe us.

I know it's usually pronounced Dih-lan, but I actually went to school with a guy who pronounced it Die-lan.  So strange.
