When do you plan on going to the hospital?

Has this been discussed yet?

Will you leave the hospital as soon as your water breaks (if your water breaks)?

Will you leave for the hospital once you start having contractions?

Will you try and labor at home? If so, for how long?

My plan is to labor at home for as long as possible, until the contractions are about 3 min apart... I don't want to be "on the clock" at the hospital if I go in too early...

  • I had a very fast labor (for a first timer) last time.  I labored at home from 6 am - 8, went to hospital and was in a room by 9:30 and had the baby at noon.

I'll probably head right in once I'm in active labor this time because I expect things to move at least as quickly as last time.

  • With DD we made the mistake of going to the hospital way too early.  My contrax were about ~3-5 mins apart, but not that strong.  It was 2am when I called the on call Dr and she said to head in. They stuck us in the frickin' triage room for like 8 hours where poor DH had to sleep on a wooden chair - it was hell!  So needless to say, I'll try to labor at home until we're certain it's time to go!!

I plan to labor at home until I'm having more than 5 an hour. I live a good ways from the hospital, and I want to be able to make it there in time regardless of what may come up on the road.

  • I'm planning to labor at home as long as possible.  I definitely won't be going before my contractions are 5-1-1.  Maybe even a little past that.  I want to spend as little time in the hospital as possible.  I'm not sure yet if I will go to the hospital as soon as my water breaks or not.  I don't want them to keep me in a bed which they are likely to do if I get there with broken water.

  • I will probably have to have a c/s so this really doesn't apply to me, but with my first I was able to labor at home for a while before heading to the hospital. For me I couldn't base it on the timing of my contractions because they were all over the place I had to base it on the intensity.

I was planning on laboring at home as long as possible to minimize our time at the hospital but then I tested positive for Strep B so that changed my plans a bit.  If my water breaks we'll go in so they can get the antibiotics started.  If it's just contractions I'll wait until 5-1-1.  I just want to make sure we get there in time to get at least one dose in before she comes, even if it's a fast delivery process.

Whoops! Was is recently? I must have missed it! Sorry!

  • 5-1-1 or a broken water (which I will take my time)
  • Until my contractions are consistently 5 minutes apart and 1 minute long (for about an hour) or until my water breaks.

I want to avoid the hospital as much as possible.

If just contractions, I'll probably labor at home 'til 5-1-1. If my water breaks, we'll definitely head in asap as my mom gave birth to all 3 of us kids very quickly (w/in the hour) after her water broke. I realize I may not be the same way but since we live 30-40 minutes from the hospital, I'm not taking any risks.

Me too...and if it happens in the day and I have to wait for DH to get home from who-knows-where (he works on the road) I don't want to push the waiting longer than needed...especially if it happens at rush hour.

This. I'll be more uncomfortable in a hospital with all the monitors poking out of me than I will be at home in my own bed. If my water breaks I still think I'll take my time. We live 10 minutes from the hospital, so I'm not too worried about rushing out the door!

  • We haven't discussed it. We are kind of go with the flow people.

I plan to labor at home for as long as possible. Where I can walk around in peace without people bugging me. Or shower, or take a bath, or have DH rub my back, or whatever I want.

I figure I'll wait till contractions are about 3 minutes apart, or I can no longer stand the pain.

  • My Dr said to call when contractions are 5 mins apart, lasting 1 min, for 1 hour, or if my water breaks. So I'll call them if those things happen and if they tell me to go to the hospital, I will. I know DH is already panicked about not making it to the hospital in time and I'm not really inclined to hang around the house for too long.

I agree 100% Gym. Although, as someone posted below, if I test positive for GBS or my water is pea soup color/consistency then I will head in ASAP.

I live about 25 minutes to an hour from the hospital depending on traffic so if I need to head downtown sooner rather than later I'll take that into account.

  • I called the doctor the last time when my contractions were 5-7 minutes apart and had been that way for an hour; the dr told me to come in & get checked.  My water hadn't broken but I was 3 cm, 100% effaced when I got to the hospital & they admitted me.  We lived at that time about 15 minutes from the hospital.

My doctor has told me to stay home until somewhere between 5-1-1 and 3-1-1, and the contractions should be really miserable.  She said that her recommendation for 5-1-1 vs. 3-1-1 will be discussed at my 36-week appointment, based on family history, strep test, etc.

At my hospital, and with my OB group, once you get to the hospital, they want the baby out quickly.  So if you get to the hospital too early, likely you will be given a bunch of interventions.  The best way to reduce the risk of lots of interventions is to stay home as long as possible.

If my water breaks, I'll head in, but slowly.

  • My doctor told me to go immediately to the hospital if my water breaks, a lot of bleeding or baby not moving. He told me to wait to go to hospital until contractions were really close. He literally told me, "go when you can't walk or talk" (I guess he meant when I can't walk or talk as much). I mean I want to be able to walk to the car, so I'll go when they're really frequent and long.

Since we are paying hospital out of own pocket, I want to make sure I labor at home as much as possible and stay at the hospital as little as possible.

  • My doctor said to call him when either my water breaks or 5-1-1. Then, I guess he'll tell me when to go. I live about 25 min away from the hospital (depending on traffic)

  • i want to labour at home for as long as possible - i find out today the results of my GBS tests so if i'm GBS+ and my water breaks i'll head straight to the hospital to have an IV put in (on the advice of my MW), but if i'm not i'll continue to labout at home until contracts are 5 mins apart.

My hospital is about 15 mins away so i figure i should have plenty of time - having said all that, this being my first baby i might panic and want to head in as soon as contractions are timable just to make sure - i can always come home again :)

  • Well my plans changed today...

I was fully planning on laboring at home as long as possible.  I have no desire to be confined to a bed for hours and hours.  HOWEVER...

I was told today I have GBS.  The doctor stressed that it was important for me to come to the hospital early to get hooked up to IV antibiotics.  Guess I won't be at the house long.
