Night wakings

For about a month or so, about 3-4 times a week, DD1 has been waking up around 1:30, crying and screaming "I want my mommy".  I go in to her but it still takes at least 5 minutes for her to lay back down and go back to sleep.  Then she wakes up 15 minutes later, doing the same thing.  Then she wakes up 1 hour later, doing the same thing again and then she is usually good until morning.  The other night, she was sleeping in my bed and did it.  She was kicking and crying and screaming "I want my mommy", even though I was holding her and talking to her.  Her eyes are open when she is doing this and she will answer questions like "do you want a drink of water, do you need covered back up".  I'm really at a loss on how to stop this but as it's waking everyone else in the house up, it's becoming a problem.  Any suggestions?

Re: Night wakings

  • I assume your DD is around 3ish? My son is 3 and he still does this as well, but usually only in spurts. One week it will be constant every night then he will go a few weeks perfect etc. I do believe its just their age. They aren't babies anymore but they still are very innocent to whats going on around them. So, perhaps she has seen something scary the past week and is just reliving it in her dreams so, having night terrors or nightmares per say? Try counseling her about it. Try to get her to talk about it and I have found that giving my son "a superman puppy" stuffed animal or a special toy with "special" powers helps him. Just make something up that will comfort her and see if that helps. Also, make sure no caffeine/sugar before bed. Hope ZzzZZ are in your DD's and your future. :o)

  • Mine does the same thing.

I got her a light up alarm clock that glows green when she is allowed to call for me....sometimes it works, sometimes not.

  • Sorry to butt in, but this sounds like a Night Terror. Ferber talks about it in his book. . .

This is my take on it too :) A few times a week (sometimes more, sometimes less), DD1 will come barreling out of her room shrieking "MOMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" She gets to my bed (and of course I'm wide awake by then) and I just walk her back to her room and tuck her in and that's it... I've tried asking/talking to her about it, but there doesn't seem to be a reason (that she can remember or express at least).
