VBS wwyd?

My church is having VBS this year & DD will *just* be old enough to go. However, they are stating that the child must have preschool experience.  Well, DD has never been to preschool.  Would it be horrible if I sent her anyway?  I think she would love it and would benefit from the experience - and she's one smart cookie....  What do you think?

Re: VBS wwyd?

  • Is she ok away from you?  What about using the potty on her own?  My guess is those are the things they're worried about.

Good point. I think she'd be fine away from me and have a blast.  The potty issue...I guess that could be an issue as she's not used to telling other people she has to go.  ;(

i don't know how your church handles it, but my old one had a nursery/daycare during VBS that the youngest siblings would stay in. they didn't do all the activities, but it might be a good experience for her and get her ready for the big classes next year? the teachers in there would be accustomed to handling things like potty accidents.

    What's VBS?

    Vacation Bible School.

  • I wouldn't because she doesn't meet the qualifications.

But WOULD complain that it is a ridiculous requirement.  If they wanted only PTed kids, then say that... most parents would understand that.  But to say that they must have been in a daycare setting before?  I don't like it.  UNLESS they're considering a lot of other group activities in that (like toddler sports teams or gymnastics or gymboree).

  • Before having DD go to preschool, I would have said put her in, she'll be fine. But after seeing my bright little DD struggle with the challenges of a preschool (Montessori, so not even super structured), I would wait and let her get that preschool experience first. There are things like lining up, going potty, washing hands, etc that they probably want her to do on her own that she would learn in a preschool setting. I would wait until next summer for that and sign her up for preschool in the fall. DD got super stressed about all the things they wanted her to do on her own, at home I help her a lot, so I had to adjust to teaching her independence and it was a struggle. So my best guess is that they want her to have those kinds of skills to attend.
  • I would call your church and speak to the person in charge of VBS so you can figure out what their specific requirements are and see if you meet them.  There are children who never go to preschool/daycare, just straight to kindergarten so saying only those who have been to preschool doesn't make a ton of sense to me.
