I was trying to research a diaper bag that was both practical and one that husband wouldn't be ashamed to lug around (he is sooo picky and his favorite color is solid black) when I came across this Timbuk2 bag "hack":
https://www.timbuk2.com/tb2/cms/hackKits/diaper_bag.htm
We love Timbuk2 products and this bag is roomy and can last well beyond the baby years.
I found a close-out cargo tote bag online at clearance prices (the newest line of totes don't have the long shoulder strap or attachments, so I preferred the older style). With the strap design, I think it would be easy enough to attach to a stroller as well. So now I'm excited about customizing the bag with a few organizers and a changing pad and I think I'll end up with a durable, roomy, functional bag that doesn't scream "diaper bag".
The Medium is plenty big. I've seen few other posts with this idea, but I thought I'd share this for those who don't like conventional diaper bags and want to get a good deal on an older tote model with shoulder strap attachment.
Re: Excited about Timbuk2 diaper hack
While I adore my totebag that I designed from Timbuk2 - I would never pay that much, to then add those accessories.
I know some people spend a lot on a diaper bag - but it wasn't us.
Yeah, I've played around on the website, customizing the colors on your own bag will easily put you over $100. But its a bag that's bombproof and versatile, well beyond the baby stage.
I'm advocating buying a close-out model with an over-the-shoulder strap. I got mine for $40 at an independent online retailer.
With the addition of a changing pad and some organizers (est. $20) I'm currently in the price range of a mid-level diaper bag at a baby store, but this one is far more superior in its construction and appearance and will be more appreciated by my DH.
