Would You Spend The Money???

I know I shouldn't even be thinking about making a large purchase right now with DH changing jobs and me resigning from my teaching position, but I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to buy a new camera. However, the one I want is $600 (Nikon D3100). My friend with triplets has one and the pictures are AWESOME! No comparison to my Canon Powershot. I have been saving my disability checks and I actually received $650 more than I had budgeted, so part of me REALLY wants to just use that "extra" money to buy the camera, but at the same time, twins are super expensive and I have other things to spend that "extra" money on... Does anyone have this camera? Would you spend the money on it?

It was mentioned that the pics were probably taken on manual settings - that's why they are so crisp and clear.  Just texted my friend and she said she hasn't had time to even play with the manual settings - all her pics are on auto.

Best Buy is offereing 0% for 18 months - making it only $35 a month.  This would be the only balance we would have on any credit card...sooo tempted!

Re: Would You Spend The Money???

  • I know the right answer is no, don't spend the money...however, I totally would. That's just me, the camera would be totally worth it.

  • That's exactly my predicament.  Logically the answer would be no, being that I'm not going to have an income come August - but we've known this and we've been putting back and have nearly $20,000 in savings to hold us for a year while I'm back in school.  And with the 0%, it makes it even all the more tempting!
  • Unless it fit into our budget, no I wouldn't.

  • If you didn't have a camera already I'd say go for it - my brother didn't take really any pictures of my neice the first year of her life because all he had was his cell phone. But because you have a camera already, I'd likely not. You never know when a major expense could arise.

  • We were very fortunate and got the 3100 for Christmas from my parents.  I LOVE it.  Now I look at pics taken with my point and shoot and they do not compare at all (and I'm still learning how to use it to it's full potential).  I think eventually, it will be great to have, but if you don't have the money now or will be severely in debt (the best buy idea is something I would do), don't do it.  I won't get another paycheck until July and even then July and Aug won't be full paychecks & our car broke...ugh!  We may be a one car fam for a little while.

  • I have that camera, and I do like it. But the Auto setting isn't so amazing to make it  worth stressing yourself out about the money.

If you do it, I would pay it all at once and don't do the financing.  You don't want to feel guilty or remind yourself of it every month when you have to make the payment!  And if you can't afford it in cash now, then you probably shouldn't get it anyway.
