VBAC

No pitocin for me...maybe

I had my 38 week appointment with the midwife yesterday and was discussing what would happen if I went past my due date.  My midwife is great and has been really supportive of a VBAC for me.  She encouraged me that I will likely go into labor on my own, but if at 12 days past my due date I haven't started labor they will consider breaking my waters to get things going.  If nothing happens then I would have to transfer my care to an OB with the hospital we are delivering at since the midwife doesn't have authority to give pitocin to VBAC patients.  All things considered, I like this plan.

I am already 2.5 cm, 50% effaced, and -2 station so I am not really worried about going late, but I wanted to make sure I had all of my bases covered.  It is so nice to be under the care of someone who really does view a C-Section as a last resort.  Good luck to all the VBAC mommas out there.

  • That's great news! I'm so jealous- can I have your midwife!? :)

  • Is she imited because of the hospital?  My midwife could (and did) give me pit.  I made it clear to her that I was only going in for the CS if it was completely medically necessary.

It sounds like you might just go into labor on your own, though! (Maybe before 40 weeks!)

  • As a hospital/practice rule, the midwife cannot medically induce me since I am trying for a VBAC.  I have known this from day 1 and I am ok with that.  We will definitly try other natural methods first, but due to the risk of rupture increasing while using pitocin they ask you be under the care of an OB in case of an emergency c-section.  There are a lot of what ifs in this scenario, but I feel better knowing what the procedure will be if it does become necessary.

  • Your lucky you get a midwife. I wanted one however my studpid insurance/hospital K _____R does not allow for a midwife when you've had a CS previously. That is a dumb rule if you ask me and pitocin is out of the question for VBACs since it puts you at a higher risk according to my MD (another lame thing). Oh well., yeah for you!
