Anybody else only having 1 u/s?

Just curious. We probably will only have the one anatomy scan at 18-20 wks, by choice. Our private insurance doesn't cover prenatal care (does cover pg complications and of course everything with the baby once it's out, just not regular maternity stuff). So we're just going to pay for the 1 u/s, since they aren't considered medically necessary anyway.

Last time I had one at 18 weeks, and then one at about 36 weeks b/c of some bleeding issues.

I don't mind not having one now, but I can't WAIT until 10 wks so I can hear a heartbeat on Doppler & know there's really someone in there.

Anybody else not having an ultrasound early on?

AFAIK I'm only having one at 20 weeks.  I'd have one earlier if I did the first tri screening, but I think I'll opt out of that one.  With DD I had four, including two early ultrasounds (one because the doctor couldn't hear the hb so just wanted to make sure everything was okay) and one very late one as part of her NST.

  • My doctor only does one. He does one in 18-20 weeks and that is it. I am fine with that as long as my baby is healthy!!

  • we opted out of the NT scan, so we'll only be getting the anatomy scan/u/s at 18 to 20 weeks

  • I normally would have had just one at the 20 week mark, but since they wanted to confirm the dating (since my charting and LMP differ by over a week), the doctor ordered an early u/s.  Since it was for a legitimate medical reason, the insurance covered it fully.

Our first u/s will be the anatomy scan at 16-20 weeks. As far as I know, that will be the only one. My doctor said she doesn't do an early u/s or multiple u/s unless there are complications.

She will listen for the HB with the doppler at our next appointment at 13 weeks.

  • I was only planning on having one, but because I was cramping so bad over the weekend that he sent me in on Tuesday to rule out ectopic....it will be expensive in the end, but I would rather have gotten it done than not have it done and have something go horribly wrong.
  • I am technically only having one because the first one (in 2 weeks) is just for first trimester screenings and we haven't 100% committed to that yet.

  • I am high risk, so I get one every month.  But, with my first I only had one (until complications in the third tri)

I can't believe how many people get so many for seemingly no reason.

If the insurance pays for it, why not? It's not like it's harmful to have an ultrasound. I think all of us like that peace of mind of seeing the baby growing properly anyway.

  • I was under the impression that our insurance only covered 1 US at 20 weeks. But after going to a genetic counseling class today I opted to do the first trimester screening which will include an ultrasound (I guess it's the NT scan), at around 12 weeks.

  • We had one with DD - and was kind of expecting the same from this pregnancy as well. I was (pleasantly) surprised today when she mentioned doing one even before I told her that I have weird cycles.

I didn't ask at my appointment how things are done (it's the first time I've been to that dr) but when I go back in 4 weeks I'll ask more specific questions.
