Power of Attorney for grandparents?

DH and I both have to travel for work next week and DD will split the three nights with our parents.

Is giving them power of attorney as simple as writing a statement and having it notarized? I've Googled the subject but would like to hear some experiences. Thanks.

Re: Power of Attorney for grandparents?

  • I dont know if its "legal" but I know when my younger BIL was still in HS and DH was out of college, when his parents would go out of town they would just type a letter saying DH was allowed to make emergency medical decisions in their absence (they would put the exact dates).

We never had to use it so I don't what would have happened since it was not notarized or anything.

A lawyer friend hooked me up with a one paragraph document when we went to Mexico.  We put in specific dates and had it notarized.

When SS went on a trip alone with his grandma, DH was required by the travel group to write a note and have it notarized. The specific dates thing was required. The note said that he was allowed to cross borders with grandma and if his parents could not be reached or in case of emergency, grandma could authorize medical care.

  • PAGAS emailed me something last fall when DH and I went OOT.  I changed jobs so I don't have the email, but page her.
  • Thanks all and thanks for the suggestion, kreeper.
