3rd Trimester

baby's position

Can your doctor tell the baby's position by just feeling your belly? I'm 28 weeks and some days it feels like the baby is heads down and other days it feels like she has turned. Do you have anymore u/s in late pregnancy to ensure baby is in the right position?

Re: baby's position

  • I can tell by what kind of movement I am feeling and where it is located.

I know with DD, the Dr. was able to tell during an internal that she was head down.

When I was in labor they did give me an u/s to confirm though.

  • As far as I know they can tell. My doctor felt around to see if she could determine my girl's position, but she said it was still to early. I assume that means baby's size, development and how far a long you are would be factors in being able to accurately determine.

  • The NP at my office was able to tell just by feeling.  He was in the right position.  But, I go for weekly BPP's now, so they don't have to feel, they can see.

  • Yes, they can feel from the outside. You don't need an ultrasound to know the position.

  • at 32 weeks my Dr. was able to feel that LO was head down, and I can as well now that there is more baby than fluid. I usually am able to tell by hiccups Big Smile

my OB wont be giving me any more u/s until labor being that things stay how they are, which is uneventful and he is measuring on target.

  • Yes your dr should be able to tell. Also you can tell by where you feel the hiccups. If you feel them low than your LO is head down and if you feel them up higher they are probably breech.
  • I also go by the hiccups being high or low
  • My doc didn't even have to feel, she could tell just by looking (at the 34 week appt) Unfortunately he is not even close to the right position so we are doing an ultrasound next week.

  • Later in pregnancy, once baby gets big enough, they can. One of my doctors told me she can actually get a better weight estimate by palpating than from the ultrasound, too. (She nailed the weight of my first, btw.)

  • Lately I feel the baby kicking or punching up high, on my right side, under my boob. Would that mean she is heads down and kicking me their with her feet? I sometime feel a jab down really low. I just can't tell if it's her arms or feet making the movement.

I usually get booty bumped in the ribs.

  • I've now decided that the docs have no clue what position because I had an ultrasound that told me the baby is breech and the doc that day had just said he was head down. I got the impression they were wrong with my first too. I asked the u/s tech and she said (secretly) they really can't tell for sure without an u/s.

Those people who are saying that the doctor can always tell just by feeling your stomach what the position of the baby is are incorrect. My baby is breech and due to the fact that we are having a high risk pregnancy, I was getting an ultrasound every week or so. Every single time I went to the OB, they felt my stomach and they told me had had flipped. Every single time I went to the ultrasound tech, they told me he has not moved and he has never moved and remains breech.

I can tell it's his head they are feeling but they always insist it is his bottom. One doctor said she would put money on it!  Lately their excuse is "oh well, he has a really big head, so it just feels like his bottom."  Very helpful. So if I wasn't having all of these ultrasounds, I would have thought that the baby had flipped over properly based on what the OBs were saying.

I think in MOST cases the doctor can tell, but I have been seen by three or four OBs,  all of whom have been wrong on the baby's position. So I would get an ultrasound, if you can, just to double check.
