f/u pumping and jury duty (vent)

I'm on jury duty for the next two weeks and I was called in the last two days. While I'm waiting in the jury commissioner office, they let me into an office they have and I can pump in there.

But, I was called for two different jury's and I really wasn't sure what to do. The first time I was excused before I needed to pump, but then yesterday afternoon we took a 10 minute break 30-45 minutes before I needed to pump. I asked the judge what to do and he kind of looked at me blankly. Fortunately, his clerk is BFing and took me to the closet where she pumped and they told me to just step out when I needed to. It worked out and I came back right before they would have called me into the box. Thankfully, they didn't need me and I was excused.

But, I feel like they should have provided me with instructions for what to do if I need to pump when I'm in the courtroom or helped me to work with the bailiff to handle it in the event that I have to pump. It's been stressful walking up to random people and asking them to provide me a place to pump and have them look at me with a blank face. I'm really not looking forward to the next time I'm called in and I probably will be again in the next couple weeks.

They keep asking for suggestions, so I'm think of writing a letter to kind of explain the needs of a pumping mother so they can be more helpful. But then I start to think maybe I'm being difficult or asking too much of them.

  • I would definitely write a letter. You certainly can't be the first and only woman to have this come up, and maybe it will help them to be better prepared in the future.

  • I'm all for doing my civic duty but they have 2 choices, either provide somewhere and guidelines for the nursing/pumping mother or allow it has a valid reason to excuse you.  All they have to do is make it so you have a private area and some guidelines by which staff are familiar with to make this work.

  • I believe that if you need to pump then you should be excused from jury duty but I'm sure they don't care that much, which is a shame considering how many billboards were put around town to encourage breast feeding.

Kentucky actually does excuse you: https://www.ncsl.org/default.aspx?tabid=14389

I'm going to write a letter. They've asked for suggestions in general all week and I think they need to think this through a little better. I can do it, but I just need to know when/how to excuse myself if needed. I'm honestly surprised my supply didn't take a hit yesterday due to stress.

  • Definitely write a letter. They might even be able to work with the BFing bailiff and have her give them some advice about what to do.

FWIW, when I was a bailiff, I always made a point to speak to visibly pregnant women and let them know to just let me know if they needed any special accommodations or to step out to use the restroom. That's part of the bailiff's job. It seems awkward, but just mention to the bailiff that you are a lactating mother and are going to need to pump at X:XX time and ask that they arrange a room for you to use. They should have an empty meeting room or jury room for your use.
