Justin loves Dr. Seuss books. His particular favorites are Fish Out of Water, Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, and Horton Hears a Who. Those might be a little long for a not-quite-one year old, though.
When he was littler, he really liked the flap books.
My favorite bedtime books have about 3 words per page. No more than one sentence. "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus" by Mo Willems falls into that category.
K, on the other hand, prefers "Bedtime in the Jungle" by John Butler and "Me and My Dad" by Alison Ritchie.

Haha this is exactly me! I do not want to drag the process out... makes me feel like a bad mom , (eta) but I also think that she is so young now, it doesn't matter how long the book is, as long as I am reading to her, when she gets older, I will read longer and more in depth stories.
Growing up my parents never read to me, so I had to pick up reading on my own, which didnt really happen until I moved to Philly and had an hour long train commute, that is when I started to fall in love with books. which is why I think it will be important to read longer stories to her... who knows if I am right or wrong with this thinking. Maybe its just to help me feel better about my childhood...
And now I will tell you my life story... jeez... sorry to ramble
We read a lot of the Sandra Boynton books, Goodnight Moon, and Brown Bear, Brown Bear (we've read most of these about a hundred times). I really like Jane Yolen and Mark Teague's Dinosaur series--they're books like How Do Dinosaurs Say I Love You? (one of my favorites right now, since it relates to terrible two behavior), How Do Dinosaurs Love Their Dogs?, etc. They rhyme and Brady loves pointing things out in the illustrations. They're really cute.
Am I the only one who can't read that book without crying like a baby? I tried to read it to DS once, and I couldn't hold back the tears.
As for our night time books, anything by Sandra Boynton is a hit. For us, lately it's been Belly Button Book and Barnyard Dance every night. B's dance for Barnyard Dance is beyond adorable.
Blue Hat, Green Hat makes DS crack up every time.
Also, any of the Fisher Price Little People books (lift the flap ones) are lots of fun!
I liked short, simple board books at that age too. The "Five Little Monkeys" books are good, "Chicka Chicka ABC" (it's the first half of "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" in a board book), any kind of touch-and-feel books, the Usborne Books "That's Not My ..." series are good for babies.
Now, some of our favorites are the Llama Llama books and almost anything by Don and Audrey Wood. "Piggies," "The Deep Blue Sea," "The Napping House" and "Ten Little Fish" are good for young kids and are popular in this house, as well as lots of Eric Carle books.
ETA: I've gotten Ellie lots of great children's books, especially board books, for cheap at TJ Maxx. That's always where I check first for books.
The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear by Don and Audrey Wood
Richard Scarry Nursery Rhymes
First 100 Words by Roger Priddy (lots of bright colors and photos)
Yummy Yucky by Leslie Patricelli
The "In My..." series by Sara Gillingham (has a little finger puppet in the picture on every page)
On my to-buy list: Global Babies or other books with faces
I always talk about the pictures, too, while reading to DD. Sometimes I don't even read the words, I make up my own story or just talk about what the people/animals are doing.
These are off the top of my head and I don't have the authors memorized, but I'm sure they'll be easy to find if you google. I love books that you can sing/read, rhyming books, or books that you can do motions to.
Baby Beluga, Down by the Bay, Over in the Ocean, Over in the Jungle, The Day the Babies Crawled Away, Knuffle Bunny, We're Going on a Bear Hunt, How do Dinosaurs... (series), Llama Llama (series), Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Where the Wild Things Are, The Cat in the Hat, Go Dog Go.
As you saw at the twin's sale, I'm a sucker for a dirt cheap children's book. I buy books at the twin's sales and Once Upon a Child that look like they are in good condition. DS has a pretty decent library. We read A LOT in this house and have since DS was a few weeks old. I used to go to the library a few times a month and just check out a stack of books to keep us from getting bored with what we had....so that's always an idea too.
Some of our go to books:
Dr. Seuss (Green eggs & ham, Cat in the Hat, Mr Brown can Moo, Marvin K Mooney)
Go Dog Go
Berenstain Bears
anything with Curious George
Magic School Bus
Classic Little Golden Books (Pokey Little Puppy, Scuffy the Tugboat, Tawny Scrawny Lion, Little Red Caboose)
I also love Corduroy and the Giving Tree. I don't know if you saw my post a few days ago about a book gift for my niece, but someone mentioned Max Lucado. I am now obsessed with his books! I bought Just in Case you ever Wonder for DD for her baptism and I've yet to read it without crying.
I guess I should have read everyone else's posts before I responded... so I second the ones I mentioned! Corduroy is probably my all-time favorite children's book.
And we also love The Napping House and The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear, Guess How Much I Love You, and Where the Wild Things Are.
A few more: Harold and the Purple Crayon and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.

Two of Charlotte's favorites!

Moo Baa La La La - Sandra Boynton
I love On the Night You Were Born...my favorite, I have shed some tears reading that book to M.
"A cow says MOOOO.
A sheep says BAAAA.
The three singing piggies say LA-LA-LA."
Katelyn loves that book too! She also loves Sandra Boynton's Going to Bed book
Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You? by Dr. Seuss
Love You Forever by Robert Munsch

Thanks for all the recs! keep them coming!
My favorite is "The Bear snores on"
DS is so obsessed with "The going to bed book" that I'm not ashamed to admit I've hid it a couple of times... Anything by Sandra Boyton is adorable.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear (I want to burn this book)
I Love You Through and Through (my absolute favorite)
Pat the Bunny (burn it too!)
Guess How Much I Love You
I'm as Quick as a Cricket
Is Your Mama a Llama?
Any Sandra Boynton or Karen Katz book
This is my favorite too. They really should put a warning on there that hormonal BFing moms may cry!
I use these links when I'm making lesson plans. They have tons of great suggestions.
