Stay at Home Moms

Advice for a new SAHM

I recently became a SAHM and am going out of my mind with boredem (LO won't be here for anotherr 4 and a 1/2 months.) I was thinking of trying "working from home"... I guess I was wondering if anyone on here does work from home, and could offer me any insight on where to begin...? Thanks in advance!

  • Once the baby is here you won't be bored. You'll be tired.

  • When you become a mom, you won't be bored.  SAHW and SAHM are not the same thing.  While I can't imagine staying at home for four months without a child, I did for a few weeks before LO #1 came along and it was glorious.  Do anything and everything you have ever wanted to do when you have free time, because when the baby comes along, life will change forever.

    This.

Go to Target, the Mall, out to lunch, wherever you want.  Get a manicure, read a book, whatever you want.  I know it seems hard now, but enjoy the time while you've got it because soon your time won't be yours.

I was off for 3 days before I had DS (he was 6 days early soo I had planned to do a bunch of things last minute but it didn't get done).  I would suggest getting all the baby stuff done & get ur home cleaned up (I got mine squeaky clean b/c I knew I wouldn't want to do that once DS was here & I still dont).  Go get ur hair cut, maybe make some dinners to freeze, & stuff like that.  DH helped me get the house really clean a week before I had DS, which was great b/c I really hate dusting & that kind of stuff & once DS got here I have no drive to do that & I could avoid it alil longer.  Also enjoy time with ur friends b/c once u have ur baby you won't see them as much.  Good luck!!

  • Enjoy it!  I had 2 months off before DD was born and I look back now on that time as blissful.  I met friends for lunch, got pedis, made nice dinners, went shopping, read books, kept the house spotless, took walks, watched Young and the Restless, cleaned out closets and took afternoon naps.  Mainly all things I can never do now.

    *sigh*

This!  I was a SAHW just before becoming pregnant and I was soooooooooooooooooooooo thankful to not have to work and just be pregnant and have my bad, tired, moody days.  Then we moved across country and just after that I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes, which felt like a freaking full time job with making sure I ate just right at just the right time, excercised enough.  I had to plan my whole day around when to eat etc.  Running errands hardly ever worked out because I had to be 100% sure that I would have access to just the right foods and just the right time.  Then I developed Pregnancy Induced Hypertension with extreme swelling, migraines and elevated blood pressure.  I was eventually put on bed rest.  I had basically put myself on bed rest previously because I couldn't do much with all the swelling and migraines, so I didn't do much.  As it got worse I wasn't even supposed to go up the stairs but once a day.

And dealing with all of that was a walk in the park compared to motherhood.  I had a planned c-section and was slower in recovery than I thought.  While talking to other moms on here I realized that my recovery was on par, it's just not how I thought it was going to go.  Then baby decided to stop sleeping right.  Oh, it's just been a mess!

A beautiful, wonderful mess that's totally been worth it but I've never been bored out of my mind yet with DS here.  Enjoy it now.  Take up a hobby.  I wish I would have done more scrapbooking before DS was born.  I could have made out the pages and just waited for the pics, glued them in, easy peasy.  I was just learning to crochet and wish I had spent more time on it.  Read something NBR and not parenting related.  Because I don't see that happening again for a few years!  Or just having 2 seconds to myself.

After a few weeks you'll develop a rough routine.  You can spend the mornings doing one thing, afternoons another etc.

  • Enjoy it! Do whatever you feel like doing! I was a SAHM almost the whole time I was pregnant and I know it's boring. I did a lot of crafts and made a lot of things for DS.

When the baby gets here, the two biggest things that help keep my sanity are: Choose one room of your house that the baby is not allowed to make a mess in. This is your clean sanctuary. DS isn't allowed in my bedroom at all unless he is sick. Only clean once. When the baby starts making messes, don't clean it up so they can just do it again. You will lose your mind cleaning up the same mess over and over. DS wrecks his room and the living room every day. I am tempted to constantly pick  up after him. At the end of the day I clean up all the toys and that's it.

Having friends with kids is a must. For a long time I felt confined to the house with a baby and no one to hang out with. Go out and do things!
