Anyone ever hear of baby's belly measuring big?

I swear my Dr. hates me and always finds a way to dig at my weight gain that he is not happy with. This is my first pregnancy...I swear I haven't been eating crazy my whole pregnancy...just a few added snacks! I'm 38 weeks today and I have gained 49lbs. I was a size 6 before pregnancy. My Dr. has been giving me a hard time the whole pregnancy because of my weight gain. So I went for my appt. today and he gives me a sono and measures the baby. Said everything is measuring fine but that she has a big belly and that "its due to my weight gain" He estimated that her weight was 7lbs. 3oz. (which from what I have read is not that bad!) Has anyone heard of a baby having a "big belly" ???

I'm not dilated he said so he wants to see my next week to see if anything has happened and then possibly induce me.

  • he sounds like an ASS - I gained 8lbs in 4 days (water) but they still had to talk me off the ledge.

My baby is over 8lbs and if they tell me one more time how big he is I will scream. They haven't said anything about my weight bothering him at all. He just sounds so rude, like thats what you want the hear right now a MAN telling you about your weight gain! The way I see it is your baby is a perfect size if not small.

I swear the docs are never happy :)  I went lastweek and now suddenly baby is measuring small, around 10th percentile.  I am now off of work, getting FNST 2x week and repeat sonos to monitor for IUGR until delivery.  After 4 days of fearing the worst DH and I finally decided there is nothing we can do about it at this point, but pray baby gains some weight, and hope that all these crazy tests are just that.

The thing i read that made me feel best was someone saying "that some babies have to be in the 10th percentile and some have to be in the 90th percentile, just b/c your baby falls in the range somewhere does not mean there is something wrong, it just simply means thats where they are" I know simple....but really does make sense, look at all women, we all range in weight, height, etc, why shouldnt our babies.

Our baby's belly was measuring big the whole time. Once I passed my GD screen my doc was fine and said some babies just have a big belly - I think at 32 weeks it was in the 95th percentile. It's now in-line with the rest of him - all his "parts" are in the 90th -95th his belly, legs, arms. They estimate him at 9lbs 1oz. I've only gained 18 pounds the whole pregnancy - so weight gain isn't necessarily the reason - my doctor has been telling me it's OK to gain a pound her 2 per week for a few weeks now - I haven't been trying not to gain weight - I'm just not - he is. I woulnd't worry about it at all.

  • I am due May 28th and our baby is estimated at 7 and a half pounds right now. We are most likely going to induce next week because of her size. I have gained about 45 pounds. I think that we must both be having slightly larger than average babies, but I am choosing not to worry about my weight gain. (My original doc gave me a hard time about my weight gain, so I switched about 10 weeks ago.) I will lose the weight, and as long as the baby is healthy, I DON'T CARE! So, I say to relax and don't let he doctor get to you! I hope you have a quick and easy delivery!

  • Thank you all for your comments supporting me!!

Mrs. DL...that makes me feel a lot better knowing that someone else was told that their baby had a big belly and that everything fell into place. It's just so funny to me how some Doctors make such big deals of things.

Choogasian - I feel the same exact way....I could care less how much weight I gain just as long as my baby is healthy! My Dr. just makes me feel like I'm being a bad mom already or something for gaining the weight because he thinks I'm hurting the baby. Mind you he also told me tonight that "you have gained the weight of 2 pregnancies!" I was like gee thanks Doc!

  • I think Dr.'s just get bored and say things to aggravate us. My Dr. told me my baby girl had a "big butt" (no kidding)...
  • I have gained 35+ pounds (I dont weigh myself anymore since around 37 weeks)
And IDC. My doctor has never said anything to me about it either....thank God I would probably go off on them. This is the one time we are 'allowed' to be fat!

  • I had an u/s at 33 weeks and the baby was estimated at 6 lbs.  Her belly was measuring 35w6d (98%)  and much bigger than the rest of her.  At that point I had only gained 20 lbs and nothing was ever said about it except that she had a big belly. My son's measurements were wonky by the end and my OB said it's mostly genetics by then (what body type the parents are) and nothing to worry about.

  • We are also getting level II growth scans for our big LO. They have repeatedly (and I mean repeatedly, every u/s tech, every imaging OB, my OB, the NST tech... everyone!!) has been asking me if I have GD and when I was tested for it to make sure that isn't why LO is so large.

What I've learned is that GD babies often have larger bellies (proportionately to the rest of their body) than just "big babies". OB may be concerned that you have late on-set GD, or sometimes maternal weight gain can also cause this. Basically, the real issue is that you would birth the head and shoulders and, unlike most babies, the rest would not slide right out. They may have a slight concern of LOs belly getting stuck.

I will be completely upfront though and say that I am NOT dealing with a big belly LO (she has a giant head and tiny belly instead), so anything I have been told about this has been in passing. As in, no one sat down and tried to teach me about this, just little things here and there. Therefore, I have no idea how factual or accurate any of this is. I just wanted to pass it along and see if it makes any sense for your situation, or helps piece together what your doctor was saying.

Regardless, you and LO are most likely fine... And I would consider getting a new OB for the rest of my health and babies if someone makes you feel crappy like this...

  • I can't wait for the pregnancy to be over just so I never have to see him again!! I'm hoping that regardless of what he says that I have a smooth delivery! My best friend was told at her 37 week appt that she had a 9lb baby, possibly 10lb if she went full 40 weeks and they induced her because of the size. She delivered a 7lb like 9oz baby. I'm praying my Dr. is wrong!

And thank you to all the ladies that have told me how much or I should say how "little" compared to me weight they have gained and still had big babies. I really think everyones body handles pregnancy differently and unfortunatly for me I pack on the weight ...which I know I will lose after!

I was overweight before I got pregnant but have only gained about 25lb and baby is estimated at almost 9lbs of that. He has a big head and the rest of his measurements are normal. My midwife is getting slightly worried about his size but says that your body rarely grows something so big it can't get it out. . .  She has said thought that because I am overweight he may have more brown fat, which is good and healthy but can make the delivery more difficult.
