Traveling: Milk in carry-on

Can you take milk through security? Not breastmilk, regular milk. We use Organic Valley and while we're open to other organic milk, I don't believe the airport offers either up. I can buy milk once I get to my destination but needs some for the evening time/dinner (flight leaves at 6:30). I have taken breast milk and formula, but never attempted milk. I was planning to take an individual milk box that doesn't require refrigeration so it would be closed.

  • I'm curious too - we are taking a flight next month and will be in the same situation.

  • You can take regular milk. I've taken it in a sippy and I just let them know that I have it. Some places will take it out and test it, others don't care. I've also had juice and the fruit/veggie pouches and nobody's said anything.
  • Until my DD was about 2.5, TSA was fine with letting those milk boxes through.  Then they started confiscating them.

  • I would just skip it altogether and just give water, just to be on the safe side.

You can buy Horizon Organic Milk from the Starbucks once you are in the terminal.  Every Starbucks sells them. They are reduced fat, but I don't think it is a big deal since it is only once.
  • I put two sippies full of regular milk in a cooler bag in my carry on.  I took it out for security the way you would w BM and told them it was BM. You may have an issue with a milk box though. No issues getting it through. DD did down one cup early on so I refilled it at the airport Starbucks condiment counter w their full milk. I figured one cup of non-organic wouldn't kill her and I'd rather have it as a back up on the plane than go without.

Edit: On the return trup I found out that the New Orleans airport terminal does NOT have a Starbucks anywhere and there was nowhere to buy milk once thru security so I was glad I was prepared.

  • I flew across country 3 weeks ago and we took two bottles of cows milk in a cooler bag plus a sippy of water.  We had no problem taking them on the plane.  They did do some sort of outside scan on the bottles, never unscrewed the caps and never asked any questions about them.

Where we did run into an issue was a bottle of Purell hand sanitizer that I forgot to take out of her diaper bag.  It was over the allowed amount and we had to toss it.

This is perfect. Thanks! (We use 2% anyways per our pedi.)

  • Thanks, I have to take my daughter's rice milk...she is allergic to soy and milk.  I hope I don't have any issues tomorrow!
  • You'll be fine. You just have to take it out and show security. I traveled through many airports with my LO's milk.

  • I fly with milk all the time, just make sure to keep it on the outside of the diaperbag. the bag will go through the x-ray and then security will pull you aside and "test" the milk's Ph balance. All is good and they will let you go to your gate, I have never had a problem, I just make sure to get to the airport extra early so that I can take my time at security. Also if you have an umbrella stroller be prepared to take LO out of it and fold it up so it can go through security as well, the regular size strollers can go through the metal detector. GL!!!

We take milk in a sippy all the time too. We use a cooler bag, unzip it for the scan and 'declare' it to the nearest TSA agent before it goes through. We usually have to unscrew the lid and they do a hover scan with some kind of test strip. Nothing goes in the milk or anything and you are the one handling it in front of the TSA agent. Hope that helps.
