July 2011 Moms

I need to AW my husband (and an update about me)

Ladies, let me tell you.  I was worried about my H managing himself through labor and delivery.  I am no longer worried.  The strength he has showed throughout the last 22hrs, he has impressed me beyond words.

He was completely strong when we got the news, walked me over (bawling) and helped me get hooked up when I was escorted to L&D all the while comforting me, went home and tool care of the dogs, made some necessary phone calls, and packed my bag (which wasn't easy to find everything).  Then, he went to walgreens to pick me up a few things, came back here and stayed until 11pm.

After all that he had to go home to care for the dogs and sleep.  Despite his 2-3 hours of sleep last night he got up to work from home today.  Then, came to see me when I called him bawling because I got too overwhelmed.  He went to an appointment he had scheduled and went back home to work some more.  He is currently cleaning our house, doing laundry, managing the painters that came to repair the rot on our house (lovely day for them to FINALLY COME) and working at home via his work computer.

He is then going to Target to get me: nursing tank tops, granny panties, and a thin robe.  He didn't bat an eye about the ladies underwear, he simply asked for clarification about what underwear I wanted and what color tank top I wanted.  After he does that he is swinging by to spend a bit of time with me and then going home to take care of the dogs again.

Thankfully my sister is coming tomorrow.  She will take over doggy and house care until Sunday. We are calling her and giving her the down low of everything after our follow-up appt tomorrow.

So here's the update on me:

I made it through almost 24 hours from my 1st steroid shot (I had it at 5pm yesterday).  Whoo hoo!  (this is very very good).  I get my 2nd steroid shot at 5pm today.  My follow-up with the peri is at 10am tomorrow, but my regular OB came in today to talk with me and look at LOs papers (since he's been on continuous monitoring).  He looks good.  He isn't showing signs of increased stress.  But, they do know because of his extreme growth restriction that he will be taken quite soon.  For your reference when I am talking about growth restriction this is how he is measuring:  Head 40%, Body 10%, Weight 3%.  So, none of you go stressing if your baby is just measuring a little small.   You can see there are HUGE discrepancies in my LOs growth.  That is how they know something is really really up.  That coupled with my super low placental pressures (which are measured by Doppler on the higher tech u/s machine) gave them the definitive diagnosis they needed)

The on call OB said, upon reviewing the paperwork from the peri that she doesn't think they'll let me go beyond tomorrow.  But, "we'll see".  If that is the case, my c-section will be scheduled for *hopefully* after 5pm tomorrow so the 2nd shot has the 24 hours to work (they like 24-48 hrs).  That said, they might schedule it for Friday morning so that I can get to at least 36hrs after the 2nd shot.  We'll see what the pressures say.  If the pressures are a little better (possible from my rest) they might wait until Friday.  If they are the same (or worse), then they'll take him tomorrow.

All-in-all I am in pretty good spirits (minus a few ridiculous ugly cry fits).   I also have not slept since yesterday morning.  So, they are going to give me something to make me sleep tonight.  They don't want me going into delivery and trying to heal from a c/s being exahusted.

ETA: I had to take out the word small from "update about me" because I wrote so much.  Whoops!

  • Oh Katie, I remember you were concerned about how your DH was going to cope because you're such a hands-on and able bodied person. While I never would have wished this on anyone, I'm so glad that you are able to see your DH really rise to the occasion. It sounds like he is being an absolute rock right now!

As for you, I'll be praying the steroids do their work and that your LO's lungs are rockstars! Thank you for the update!

  • Your husband does sound amazing and like such an incredible support for you. I can't imagine how scary this all must be for the both of you...but wow what a blessing you were able to catch it while there was time. I'm sure you'll have a good prognosis and I'll definitely be keeping all three of you in my prayers. Thanks so much for updating and I'm sure we'll all be anxiously awaiting more updates from you over the next few days! Hang in there!
  • Your DH sounds amazing.  What a lucky little boy your LO is to have such loving, supportive parents.

That said, please do make sure DH is getting support (from someone in addition to you - you have enough to think about already!) and has someone he can talk to.  He must be under enormous stress and pressure, and you're going to continue to need his help in the days and weeks ahead, so please make sure someone (again, OTHER THAN you!) is making him slow down, get rest, and process through all that's happening as this goes along.

GL and take care - T&P headed your way.  Every minute you keep LO in will be a blessing for his little lungs. I hope you make it to Friday, but the precious time you have bought him already will pay enormous dividends.

  • That's awesome your H is being so supportive and I'm glad you're in good spirits! GL tmrw or Friday!!!

Katie, I am seriously bawling while reading this.

You and your husband have shown so much strength & courage already... I can't even imagine what you are going through. I know you were feeling so disconnected from this pregnancy & you were terrified of a c-section and yet it's 100% because of your instincts that your LO's life will be saved. I'm so proud of you for accepting this & taking this challenge head on.

I'm praying for you, your husband, and little Gabriel. Thanks for updating us & hopefully you will be able to update us tomorrow? (or perhaps your labor buddy can?)

If your LO is born on Friday they will have an excellent birthday.  It's my nephew's 6th birthday, and he was also born on a Friday the 13th.

Wishing you the best over the next 48 hours!

  • Thanks for the update. Praying for you, your husband, and Gabriel! Sounds like you have a great attitude. I'm so glad you are in good hands now and that you checked on the lack of movement. I can't imagine how shocking it all must be, but I'm so glad your husband is providing good support. Get some rest for when you get to meet your little boy!

  • I've been thinking about you.  Glad to hear that your DH is stepping up and taking care of things.  You certainly do not need any more extra stress.  Hope your appt with the specialist goes well as can be tomorrow and that the c-section can be held off until at least Friday.  Try to get some rest and remember to try to relax and take a deep breath.  You're in good hands right now.  Lots of ((HUGS)) to you and DH.
