Worried about LO's weight again

I started back to work full-time two weeks ago. Since then, LO's rate of weight gain has slowed down a lot (we have a scale at home). He had steadily gained 1 oz/day prior to that, but then only gained 6-7 oz over the last two weeks. He only eats 7-10 oz while I'm gone (this has slowly increased over the past two weeks), but he cluster feeds in the evening, and we nurse at least once overnight and in the morning, too, so he's eating at least 8 times a day. On the weekends we nurse exclusively. I pump about 18 oz while I'm at work, so we have a nice freezer stash.

He has plenty of wet diapers (plenty!) and he is pooping once a day. He doesn't act hungry and is generally happy except when his gums hurt.

We are pretty sure he's also teething--his gums are changing, his cheeks are rosy and he clutches his little face, drools and chomps on everything.

So should I worry? We have his 4-month appointment today so I'll ask the pedi, of course, but I always irrationally worry that they'll blame me for doing something wrong.

  • It sounds like you're doing everything the way you should.  A gain is a gain.  I think the only time you should really worry is if its a loss.

  • Take a deep breath, and STEP AWAY FROM THE SCALE!

You're definitely worrying about this too much.

As long as he's not losing weight, and is staying relatively within his growth curve, he'll be fine.

    I can't believe he's already 4 months!

Ditto, ditto, ditto. You are bordering on obsessive, mama!

Agreed. I know you're worried because he was so small when he was born, but he's fine! He's peeing, he's pooping, he's eating, and he's happy. That's all you need to worry about! I'm sure your pedi will tell you the same thing :-)

At some point babies start slowing on their weight gain, right?  By four months (or even his adjusted age), I think it's safe to wean yourself from the scale so that you maaaaybe weigh him once a week.  As long as he's a happy baby who's still peeing and pooping, I don't think you need to watch his weight as closely anymore.  Why don't you ask your ped. what they look for in weight gain at his age  - whether weekly, monthly, or just by his next appt. - so you can come up with a weekly or monthly average yourself if you need to weigh him all the time to check in.

  • they do go through periods where weight gain is a lot smaller or there is none. He is four months old, healthy, happy and probably becoming more active so stop worrying :-)

  • In fact, I think you should sell that darn scale.

Put a listing up on e-bay or CL!  :)

  • Agree with pp, step away from the scale.  It'll drive you nuts.  Stick out tongue

  • I agree with everyone else.  :-)  I know it's hard to do.  DS has a history of losing weight and I still occasionally obsess over it, but ultimately, if they're healthy, everything evens out in the end.  Heck, teething and illness can temporarily interrupt eating and cause weight fluctuations, but they still keep going up overall.  I could have sworn that DS wasn't going to have gained enough weight by his 3 year appointment.  He hardly ate for the last year.  Somehow he ended up HIGHER in percentiles than he has been since he was 9 months old.
