How to store kid toys

What's your solution for managing kid toys? We have a toy chest but the rest is all over the place. We live in a small house. Are your lo's toys in their room, or in a play room? Are they stored in baskets, etc? I'm already tired of our living room looking like a preschool full of primary colors, and I know it's going to get a million times worse when he's the one pulling them all out.

Re: How to store kid toys

  • we have this storage thing in the living room, in the family room there is a closet I keep most the toys in and eventually I would like all the toys to be in their rooms but for now I'm stuck with toys everywhere I guess!  I might add that all the little toys like legos are going into Cruz's room once J is mobile!

  • I dont know what kind of coffee tables or end tables you have in your living room, but we got some nice looking bins from target that fit in the spaces of our coffee table and end tables and we keep the downstairs toys in there so the place doesnt always look like such a disaster zone.

  • We originally kept most of his toys in a plastic bin in the "family" room, then my friend gave me the idea of putting them in the closet.  So I cleaned out our living room closet and put all the toys in there.  That way at night we can pick them all up and put them away.  I won't have toys all over the room I sit in after T's asleep.  But we are moving, and don't have a closet that size anymore so all his toys will go in his bedroom closet.

  • We have medium sized bins in the main rooms DD plays in; living room, master bedroom and the a bigger one 'baby safe zone',  The toy chest in her nursery has older kid toys.  Each bin has a few toys and books.  That way it's easy to pick up the toys when we go to a different room, take a nap or go out.

  • We have a train table she's growing into out in the living room, so whatever goes on that can stay out. Otherwise. I have four or five cardboard boxes with her other toys and I'll rotate them every once in a while. My plan is to upgrade the cardboard to some of those Ikea boxes - cheap, fairly sturdy, have lids, and go better with the decor.

  • I bought a hamper that doesn't totally look like a hamper in the living room.  In the kitchen/dining room/sun room, there is an ottoman whose lid comes off.  In his room, there are a couple of baskets on the bookcase.

  • We have some nice baskets that are under the ottoman/coffee table that hold books, puzzles, musical instruments, and diaper stuff.   Then we have a fabric hamper that holds stuffed animals although no one plays with those so i really should repurpose that bin for something else and put the stupid animals up in Ben's room.  We havfe a wooden toy box that holds mostly hats and dress up stuff.  And a three drawer plastic thing that's not nice but the perfect size - one drawer for cars, one for animals and one for people.  We have so so many small things like that.  Then in our entertainment center we have one area that can hold big vehicles.  And still, there are toys everywhere down here in the family room.  There's a kid sized table and chairs, a rocking horse, kid arm chairs, play kitchen, and then some big things like a Batcave and a fisher price house and weebles house - those just get stacked over by the fireplace.    Then, we have a play room upstairs with a train table with big bins underneath, and a cube ikea thing that holds other dress up stuff, and some other random toys.   The boys rooms don't really have toys - just books.

We have so much stuff everywhere.  But really, I don't mind..  The kids live here too.  I think it's ok to have kid stuff that "shows".

  • Room: There are just places to play without the toys.  So there is a barbie house, kitchen and stroller/high chair for dolls.  All the toys that go with them are high on a shelf in her closet.  She gets one bin at a time.  This way, I don't have a toybox mixed with everything, it keeps mess at a minimum and she learns to clean up after herself.  She has a shelf of books, puzzles, instruments.  Then in her closet is Little People buildings.  The actual Little People have a box.  She also has a quiet area on her bottom bunk with animals and pillows.

Living Room: Baby stuff galore!  The babies have a huge corale with an alphabet mat on the bottom.  They have two bins in there, one riding toy and one area with a pillow and stuffed animals.  Meg also has an art center behind the couch...and her toys get drug in there since at least one baby is usually sleeping at any moment.

  • We have one of those 9 square cube systems with cloth pull drawers. The top 3 cubes are bookshelves. We also have train table with huge pull drawers to store little people toys, trains, chalk and puzzles. And our coffee table in the livingroom is an old military chest repurposed into a toy chest.

My mom has a basket obsession and she gave me a ton of baskets to use for his room. I have a few under his crib and a few against the wall. We also have a coffee table with baskets in the living room. The coffee table baskets house cars, trucks, trains, train tracks, and people/animal toys. He also has his own area of the living room, between the couch and the lazy boy, where he has a table and chair set, along with baskets to keep all his big toys. We can clean up super fast and make it look like there are virtually no toys, as long as you don't look on the side of the couch that isn't visible from the front of the living room.
