Possible infection from cut, what to do?

I noticed a few days ago that DS had a tiny cut on his finger and didn't think much of it. This morning, his finger is red and swollen and there are red bumps going all the way to his knuckle. It looks like there's a scab where the cut was, but it's very red surrounding. Should I call the Doctor? Or is there any type of cream or something I should use?

Re: Possible infection from cut, what to do?

  • Katelyn has cuts all of the time from her attacking herself.  We were told to put neosporin or polysporin on her cuts/scabs.  After a couple of days of using the ointment, if it still seems infected, I would be inclined to call the doctor.  I always worry and get anxious about it being MRSA.

  • Call the doctor. It could be cellulitis which is a common infection for children that infects cuts and abrasions. It's not a big deal if treated early but can become serious if not. DD earned an overnight stay at Childrens on IV antibiotics thanks to cellulitis.

  • I'd probably call for an appt; but I'm a big fan of $20 peace-of-mind.
  • Update- I called this morning and described his finger and they told me to bring him in. The doctor gave him some amox and said that should take care of it. She was concerned with the swelling but said that it should clear up in a few days, big relief!
