VBAC

Advice for appointment today

J&MsMomJ&MsMom member

I have an OB appointment today and I think they are going to want me to schedule my c/s.  They have told me I can attempt a TOL but if I don't go on my due date, then I have to have a c/s.

Should I refuse to schedule the c/s.  I don't know what that will accomplish, but I am wondering what will help me be in the best position for the VBAC.

Re: Advice for appointment today

  • If they want you to schedule your c/s already (which seems early since from your ticker it looks like you're about 25 weeks) then insist that you schedule it for after your due date.  If they said you can attempt a TOL, they should be okay with that.  It will at least give you some time to allow you're body to go into labor before then!  My doctor said a similar thing to me - if I don't go into labor naturally by 41.5 weeks, we'll need to schedule a RCS.  I'd prefer not to schedule one until absolutely necessary.  That'll give me a chance to try all the tricks for naturally inducing labor Wink  Good Luck!

  • Honestly, if they are telling you that you have until 40 weeks to try for a VBAC, they aren't supportive of it. I'd look for a new provider, ICAN is a good place to start. hth and good luck.

  • My advice is to find a new provider.  Any doctor that says you can only havea  TOL if you go into labor by your due date is not really VBAC friendly.

I would ask why they are cutting you off at 40 weeks and ask if you can have until 42 weeks.

As for scheduling it, I would say you are not comfortable scheduling it until 42 weeks and see what they say.  They may surprise you, they may need to be fired.  Please don't be afraid to walk away!

  • What is the reason they want you to deliver by your due date?

I have to deliver by 40 weeks because of my GD, but if GD wasn't in the picture, I wouldn't be comfortable scheduling a c/s that early without a reason.

I'd ask your doctor why it is necessary to schedule for 40 weeks.

Agreed.  Is there a specific medical reason or is it just because you are a VBAC?  If it's just because you're a VBAC, I would question whether they are really supportive of your desire to have a vaginal birth.

I'd try to push the RCS date as far back as I could, 41 or 42 weeks.

They told me there was an increased risk of rupture if you go past your due date.  I will ask them if I can schedule  at 41 or 42 weeks adn see what they say.

That's what they all say Stick out tongue. Seriously though, the risk of rupture goes up after 41 weeks, but it's not a huge amount (Iris has links/studies!! hee). It's completely reasonable to tell them you'd like to go to 42 weeks, and agree to non-stress tests every few days past 41 weeks. hth

  • I agree that the increased risk of rupture is negligable after 41 weeks.  Also, I believe there are studies that are now suggesting that the average length of pregnancy is closer to 41 weeks than 40.  So, fore them to tell you that unless you have an EARLY baby, you have to have a CS doesn't make sense.  I think, based on where you are in your pregnancy, you are better off finding a VBAC supportive OB rather than constantly fighting with the one you have.
