Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Cow's Milk Prior to 1 Year?

Did anyone start LO on cow's milk prior to 1 year?  Our pedi says to start at 9 months.  I always thought they shouldn't have it prior to 1 year old, though.

Re: Cow's Milk Prior to 1 Year?

  • I have read that babies need BM/formula as their main source of nutrition up to 12 months. If they have a well balanced solids diet (as our LO does) we were told that as soon as she meets her 20oz of formula a day we should give her milk. She actually prefers the milk to water and juice.

We have a ton of formula that we will have left over though so I plan to mix a scoop with every 4 oz milk until it's gone.

  • We started at 11 months, anticipating a full month for transition, but in actuality she was drinking WCM exclusively one week later.
    Shot first, questions later.
  • I am starting to wean DD, but will still am using BM or thawed BM to feed her.  We will start introducing WCM next week (at 11 months) mixed in with the BM to introduce the flavor.  I wanted to wait until she was closer to a year to introduce it since I've also been told that BM/ Formula should be the primary source of nutrition the 1st 12 months.  I had the okay from the pedi at her 9 months to introduce WCM a little early.

  • I was told I could start at 11.5months which is when we will start the transition.

  • I just started the switch this week.  I'm doing 1/4 WCM to 3/4 formula, then in a few days I'll do 1/2 and 1/2, then 3/4 1/4, etc.  I also gave him WCM straight-up over the weekend with a meal just to see if he liked it, and he loved it.

Same here.  Our pedi encouraged us to start just prior to his 1 year appointment so we could discuss how he's doing with it.  I'm actually starting tomorrow (tried to start last week but he ended up with a nasty virus, so it got put on the back burner).

  • I was told 9 months was too early, but that we could introduce WCM "close to" a year so that DD could be fully transitioned at child care by a year and I can give up the pump.

My ped said I could supplement at this point.
  • We had our 9 months appoiment last week and after they did blood draw to test his iron levels the Dr. saod it was ok to start him on regular milk. his levels were exelent and his weight and high is great so he recomended us to start. But since we still have a big can of formula left we are just going to suplement until we run out of formula. I did notice that since we have been supplementing he is pooping regular every day and is nice and soft, sorry TMI!

  • We started giving WCM to P last week, during the day with breakfast and lunch.  He still gets about 12 - 20 oz of formula per day but in two bottles first thing in the morning and at bedtime.

  • Just thought I should add that my SIL started my nephew on milk around the 9 month mark and he ended up having lots of digestion issues and had to go see a pediatric gastro doc to get everything worked out (he's fine now, just wanted to let you know!).  He's now 18 months old and totally fine and does well with milk.

  • We`ve been told that at 9 months we can offer milk in a sippy cup after meals, but just a little at a time ( it will replace the water that we used to give). Then gradually switch by increasing the amount until it`s all cow`s milk.
