One of my Mom's friends has her daughter's prom pictures posted on FB. I feel like some of the dresses are very inappropriate. Our HS dress code said that our shirts had to meet our pants, no belly showing....so I'm guessing these dresses would be a no-no? Not to mention my parents would have NEVER let me out of the house like that. Ugh, Charlotte will remain locked in her room until she is 23. I really hate that girls at this age feel the need to look so much older than they are.
Am I off base here? Thoughts?
Re: Prom Picture...yikes!
I truly do not understand it.
But then again, I don't get the hate against jean shorts, either.
Clearly I am no fashion expert.

Katie, I didn't know jean shorts were that bad either! I don't own a part of shorts...period, but that's another issue. I think jean shorts are cute on all kinds of people. I am thinking the bad style comes from the middle aged men that wear short cut-offs....ewww.
I don't own any shorts, either! I wear capris in the summer.

Same here!! I haven't worn shorts since my mom put me in them! I wear capris as well.
I don't know which is worse in this picture- the dresses or the Jersey Shore tanning. I know for a fact they didn't have those kind of dresses when I went to prom 13 & 14 years ago (ouch!!)
I should post pics of my DD's friends at the Mardi Gras dance earlier this years.... bunch of 12 & 13 year olds in strapless mini-dresses with spray tans and heels. It was cute. Not really.
When DH and I were talking about this, he said he thought it gave the male date a certain expectation for the night of prom... and just fulilled the idea that prom night is a chance for the guy to get lucky.
I am not sure I agree, but I can see where he is coming from.
This. I graduated in 1999 and those would not have been a big deal. Now, the cutouts have to go. I think they are ugly anyways.
Honestly, I was just about to agree with Bellevue's "I don't think these dresses are that bad" opinion. In general, I'm less offended by exposed abdomen than a low plunging neckline on a teenager, which some of my own dance dresses may have been guilty of...maybe not. I DO distinctly remember wearing a red sequin dress (which I borrowed from my short, size 0 cousin) to my junior homecoming. It had a higher neckline, but let's just say I am quite a bit taller than my cousin...and was definitely never a size 0. Looking back, it was definitely a bit too snug...and a bit too short.
Perhaps I'll work on a little "old school" album on FB.
I do agree with this. My react was to dresses #1 and #3. No one can convince me those are appropriate for a high school girl. Actually, #4 probably wouldn't have been at my prom since I don't recall anyone wearing a short dress, but it's nothing next to #1 and #3.
I commented about this on FB last prom season. I think cut-outs belong on a BEACH, not on a beatch at prom.
JK, jk. But I do think they are hugely inappropriate for a formal dress. My little bro-in-law's date had one on for his prom last year and it disgusted me.
I wore a long, black dress (like the one Julia Louis-Drefus is sporting in the photo below), from Bebe, to my junior prom. It had a very similar sheer panel in the middle (although, like JLD's, it did not reveal my navel). Is this trampy?
Okay - I don't have a picture of me at prom...but I did wear it again in college, this is what I could find on FB. A bit of boobage, but oh how I wish I still fit in that dress.
I think this is appropriate because the sheer panel keeps a bit to the imagination. Definitely does not turn you into a hussy!

Ooh yeah I had the same reaction to my sister's and her friends' dresses this year. I was blown away by the fact that my mom let her buy such a revealing and expensive dress. We literally had to tape her dress to her boobs so the dress would stay in place and the back of the dress was very low too. DH brought up the obvious of what a teenage boy would be tempted to do with such a dress, much to my horror but not surprised.
When I was her age, I was only allowed to shop on the clearance rack and a regular v-neck cut was considered not covered up enough. Apparently the cut-outs are in style now...as are short dresses. I know back in the day if you wore a short dress you were a slut and it'd raise eybrows. Seriously...kids these days! In a few years, they'll just wear a bikini to prom :P.
I'll post pictures of my/her and her friends' dresses later in the above thread... I at least found my sister's dress to be the most tasteful of them all...

I'm not really shocked by this since my senior prom was not that long ago (2005) but I do think the dresses are fugly as well as the way too fake tans. I know since I went to a private Catholic school that we had a dress code for all dances. It wasn't super strict but it did have rules about how low cut it could be, how far down in the back it could go, how short it could be, etc. You could still skank it up pretty easily but nothing as bad as those dresses.
DH on the other hand, went to a really small Christian school and the dress code there was completely RIDIC...I'm talking straps had to be at least 1 in thick (no strapless at all), no cleavage could show AT ALL, the girls all had to bring in the dress they were going to wear a week before the dance and the female staff had to approve it. His sister said that when you brought the dress in they would make you bend over to see if cleavage was showing when you bent over. So even if your dress was modest if it was too loose on the top it was a no go. It couldnt be above knee length and obviously cut outs would have been WAY out of the question. DH's poor sister had to make all of her dresses because at a 34F bra size even a turtle neck gives the poor girl cleavage. I'll have to see if I have any of my prom pics on my other computer since my hot hottie prom date in DH.
lol and that's why DH said he only wants boys. According to him, if you have a boy, you only have to worry about one penis but if you have a girl then you have to worry about all the penises in the world! Oye!

My dad and brother tell me this all the time. That since I have a boy I only have to worry about one penis.
