Pregnant after a Loss

For those that had an ultrasound at 5 weeks...

Can you pip for me?

A good friend of mine has struggled with infertility for years and is FINALLY pregnant after 2 IUIs and 2 IVFS. They put in 2 embies, but only one stuck. Her u/s a 5 weeks showed a sac and the RE said the yolk wasn't as bright as she'd like. I'd love to see what you saw at 5 weeks for the sake of comparison...

TIA!

Re: For those that had an ultrasound at 5 weeks...

  • At 5 weeks? Seriously? Most REs won't even bother doing an u/s until 6w...pretty much b/c you can barely see anything at all at 5w. I'm totally side-eye-ing her RE for doing an ultrasound that early. At 5w, the RE should still be doing betas, if anything.

My earliest u/s was at 5w5d (because LMP put me at 6w4d). All they saw was a sac and the beginnings of a yolk sac.

I don't have a pic on this computer, but you really can't see anything. A little tiny white dot inside of a bigger black sac. That's it.

I love this response. I told her not to worry, but of course she is. Her RE even asked (with wand inside her vag during u/s), "You have another embryo frozen, right?" Ugh.

I had one at 5w2d and we saw a gestational sac and yolk sac. I don't have a picture though.

Have you searched in google? I remember finding a lot of early u/s pictures online.

Yeah, but I wanted to show her ones of people that I "know" and who are having viable pregnancies thus far. I don't trust the internets totally.

Ugh, indeed. Her RE gets the "dude, seriously?" award of the day. I googled 5w, and this is pretty much what my 5w5d looked like:

Also, what were her betas? That is probably the best indication this early if the PG is viable or not.

Thanks. I don't remember what her betas were, but they did double. Her RE is a beotch.

I had one at 5 weeks and 3 days, only because they didn't believe me when I said I always ovulate late. I don't have the picture scanned into the computer (yet), but we saw basically the same thing in the link above. The RE said the baby was 2mm, but I don't really know if he meant "baby" or yolk sac. I was so happy something was there that I didn't bother asking.

I would tell her not to be worried about what he said at this point though. I'm also surprised he did it so early. It just seems like it would do more harm than good with the stress of it all.

  • I have no pic, but wanted to pop in and send your friend's RE a virtual b*tchslap for making her worry like this.

  • I had my 1st ultrasound at 5 weeks 2 days because I started bleeding so they went ahead with an ultrasound knowing I was very early.  We saw a gestational sac and the start of a yolk sac.

This week we saw our little peanut and got to see the little flicker of the heart and get a heart rate and all!  A lot can change in a week!

  • I had an emergency u/s at just over 5 weeks (5w3d, I think) with my twins due to spotting.  Unfortunately, the nurse who printed out the pics didn't actually print the ones of the babies.

You really can't see a whole lot at 5 weeks.  FX for her that everything is going great.

  • I had mine before 6 weeks, but I forget the exact date.  One of my embies barely had a yolk sac and was much smaller than the other one.  The RE told me that it could be a vanishing twin.  A week later it was much closer in size and I think both had heartbeats by then.  Tell her not to worry yet.  I'm sure things will look better by her next appt.  Wish her good luck for me!

  • I had one at 5w4d, only to confirm whether or not it was not ectopic.  We saw a gestational sac & an egg yolk, no fetal pole- the doctor said things change SO much each day at that stage, so she was probably a few days early.  My u/s showed a fairly light/blurry white circle for the yolk.  I agree with everyone else that betas are the best indicators right now.  Please tell your friend that she needs to find a much better OB than her RE & good luck to her!

  • My first u/s was at 5w2d. My RE always does them that early to make sure that the embryo(s) is in the uterus and to see how many stuck. He didn't print the pics where you could see the yolk sacs though. The pics I have just look like black blobs.

  • Here is mine from my 5th week, although I'm not sure of the exact day.  Not much to see and certainly nothing "bright":

    image

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
