Wow, separation anxiety has hit

When E was about 9 months old he would cry a little when we dropped him off at daycare, and we thought we were dealing with separation anxiety then. Well he was great for the past 3 months. Starting last week he has started full on crying and screaming while grabbing onto our legs. It breaks my heart. I hate to see how upset he is. I'm sure it only lasts a few minutes, but he won't even let his teachers hold him. Poor little man. I'm not sure if there is anything we can do to make the transition easier for him. We try to make the drop off short. Tell him we love him, tell him when the other parent will be there to pick him up, and then go.

Is there anything else we can do?

Re: Wow, separation anxiety has hit

  • When DS transitioned to his new classroom about a month ago he would cry when I dropped him off and try to run for the door before I could leave. So, what I have found that works for us is I bring him in, most of the time there is at least one other kid sitting at the table eating breakfast. I sit him at the table, put some cheerios on the table, give him a kiss, tell him I love him and will be back later and make my swift exit. Since I started doing this he no longer cries and waves bye at me as he eats his cheerios, he loves food though, so it's a good distraction. Another mom who's boy moved up at the same time had the same problem, but worse, she started doing this as well and she has had few issues leaving.

  • DH tried this approach this morning and he said the different was like night and day. He didn't even have time to say goodbye to his dad. He was busy eating with his buddies.

    Thank you!!!

YAY, I'm glad it worked for you. We are moving and DS is starting a new daycare next week, so I plan on continuing this and hope it works.
