NBR: Any one take their mom/dad to social security?

I have to take my mom tomorrow.  I know the documents to bring and have a rough idea what the outcome of the visit will be, but I was just wondering  if anyone has any tips for me?  Both of parents collected social security.  My father just passed away I have to take my mom in to determine what benefits she can get as a survivor.  Ideally she would be able to keep my dad's because his was a little higher than hers, but it won't be enough for her to live on.  Is there any way for her to get Dad's and part of her's -- is that possible?  TIA.

Thanks - I am a little anxious.  It is amazing what the women on this board know so I thought I would toss it out there.  It is a little tough to deal with a newborn and aging parents. :-)

  • I'm so terribly sorry for your loss.

I don't know about social security, but hope that everything works out financially for your mother.

Thank you.  I appreciate the words of support. :-)

  • Sorry about your dad.

    No advice on SS here.

I don't think you get both SS checks -- you end up getting the higher one (which is your dad's in this case) in most cases. They might be able to refer you to other social services which can help her find subsidized housing and other reduced cost options.

This is exactly what happened.  Thank you for responding.

I think my mom had to choose, and she picked my dad's because it was higher. I can't remember why she would have even thought to pick hers, don't know the details.  I want to say she waited until she was 64 to collect it, even though she was just 50 when he died, but maybe she was able to collect his TIAA-CREF earlier. My sister was still a minor, so they collected SS for her immediately until she aged out.
