Anyone a gardener?

I love, love, love roses.  I've bought them in the past, but never really had success making them THRIVE.  They survive, but that's about it.  Well, I gave up for a while, but today, I found a rose bush that I just fell in love with and couldn't pass up.  Any tips for a healthy, happy rose bush that will thrive?

Thanks!

Do different varieties do better in certain soils?  I've always heard that roses are hard but I had two mature rose bushes when we bought the house and I've never done a thing with them and they bloom like crazy.  I put two more in and they're doing great too.  I have sandy soil (REALLY sandy soil) and they seem to like that.

  • I have no idea.  We also used to live in a cold, dry climate, and now we're in a hot, humid climate, so I don't know if that will make a difference in their care.

  • This is going to sound kind of weird but it works-  if you or your hubby fishes, catch a fish (we have lots of large mouth bass that work) and when you dig the hole throw the fish in before you plant the rose bush.  The decomposition of the fish is great food and fertilizer for your roses.  Good luck!

  • BTW... this is the rose.  Of crouse it was the only one of its kind, and it was the ONLY one that didn't have a tag to tell me what variety it is!!

  • I love roses!  I have a rose tree and a rose bush.  The trick is at least 6 hours of sun, if not eight.  Water very well the first year.  And twice a season feed it 1-2 cups of coffee.  If you live where it gets cold..below freezing.. cover it with a tarp.

    Good luck!

My DH's family does this with everything anyone plants.  It really does seem to work!

  • That's a gorgeous rose!!!  My grandma, now my mom and I have been growing roses for years.  The one mantra that has been passed down over the years is "first they sleep, then they creep, then they leap."  It takes about three years for a rose bush to get acclimated to it's home (sometimes longer).  I took a clipping from one of my mom's bushes three years ago.  I was convinced it was dead the first year, but left it alone.  Last year it was still tiny but had a little more life to it.  This spring it actually looks alive!  Good luck with yours, but don't be disappointed if it doesn't take off right away- give it time.

  • I've been growing roses for years.  Make sure you plant it in a spot where it will get a LOT of sun.  I didn't notice where you live, but here, before winter gets here, I normally cut my rose bushes back and cover the base of the bush with mulch.  Roses are pretty hearty and it takes a lot to kill them as long as they don't get diseased or pests.  I wound up not doing a blessed thing to mine before this past winter and they've totally bounced back and have a TON of buds on them that should be blooming in the next couple of weeks.  When you water them, water at the base, not from the top down.

Also, check them for aphids (little white bugs) and Japanese beetles.  They love roses.  I have used ladybugs and praying mantis as pest control when I find those bugs on my roses and it's really helped.  GL!
