omg kids these days

Just a mini vent on my day.  I'm a 2nd grade teacher and one of my students today was mad, throwing his pencil up and down.  I asked him to please stop but he continued.  So then I told him to come and bring me the pencil, because I was working with a group of students.  He then slid the pencil to me.  I told him to get up and hand me the pencil.  His response:  "Well you got two legs, you get it."

I wanted to scream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And then slap him in the face....what is wrong with kids these days??  It's one thing for your own child to be sassy towards you...because I know that's reality, but my mom would have beat my behind if I'd of talked to a teacher that way..or anyone for that matter.

In the end, I wrote him up and he was out of school suspended...and he was HAPPY! ugh.....

Re: omg kids these days

  • I am a School Psychologist and my daily life is to deal with "those" kids all day long! So I know how you feel! Its frustrating bc I truely feel there is a lack of discipline at home and a lack of support for the school in terms of behavior that cause many many problems these days!

Ex-teacher here! Amen to the bolded part above. Especially at that age, you get phrases like that from hearing it at home . . . sad.

I completely agree!  I have about 3 of "those" in my class....it's so frustrating!  The parents are no help at all.

  • I think that kids like that see out of school suspensions as extra days off. Especially if their parents don't punish them for being suspended.

My mom would have done the same thing!!

My mom is a high school teacher. I cringe at the stories she tells me. One student had not turned in any homework for a month and was cutting class. It took 3 no shows for her mom to finally make it in for a meeting. The mom's response to her was, "My daughter is your responsiblility from 7-3:15. This is not my problem"!!! WTF?!?!?  My mom's favorite is when the kids look at her and tell her that, "You can't touch me. It's against the law, I'll have you arrested" I would have never acted like that to ANY adult!!

  • I teach at an "inner city" high school.  I have had paper balls and books thrown at me.  I have been called (no lie) a fvcking dirty, swine @ss ***.  These are just the extreme examples.  Today, I told some kids in a class I was covering to knock it off, because they wouldn't stop hitting each other.  The girl said something to the extent of don't fvcking talk to me like you's my mom!

I am so over teaching.  I didn't sign up to be the warden.

Oh wow....I commend you for being in an inner city school! I have heard many horror stories and can't even imagine being pregnant and dealing with that crap!

  • That is so sad. Clearly he isn't getting what he needs at home. I think it is so unfair when parents don't do their job and them ship them off to a teacher. Going to school is a huge privilege, it's a pity that more people don't understand that.

  • God bless you for your patience!  As a nurse, sometimes there are some patients/family members that you just have to bite your tongue with!  I wish I could write them up too...
  • This is almost my whole class and I teach first. I have had pencils, books, glue, chairs, trash cans and other things thrown at me. Plus been kick and hit. This is my first year teaching. I've even learned new cuss words. My kids say send me to the office they are not going to do anything to me or send me I want to get pops.

The problem I see is babies are having babies. They want their kid to be there friend. They don't want to discipline. I saw a mom say she pay her kid $5 if she stayed in my class because she ran out crying when her mom stopped by one day. Most of my parents are like I'll buy you a toy if you behave. The only way I can get these kids to do something is to bribe them. They are always wanting things and don't understand why they can't have everything they want.

Same here!!  I'll ask them to do me a favor, like walk to the office to bring a note or something, and half the time they'll tell me "no." or "what do I get if I do it?" I just want to yell, "Please just do me this favor!!  It's a nice gesture you do for others and get nothing in return but self satisfaction!" lol

This boy who I was talking about, has also left the classroom in anger, and tried running away.  Last year was my first year and I had only three "good" kids..the rest were terrible.  Sorry your first year is tough but hopefully it gets better.

PS - DH said if it's still not better in a year,  I can apply to the private school and hope for a job...we can afford the pay cut! Thank goodness!!

This is exactly right. I teach high school and when a kid is suspended, he is usually happy about it because it's a vacation. There is no follow-up at home. I once had a dad tell me he wasn't going to punish his child for something he was already punished for at school. Indifferent

I usually have a major "Ahhhhhhhhhh" moment when I meet parents for the first time. It usually explains a lot. Kids display learned behaviours and are generally a product of their environment.

This reminds me, when we were doing preschool photos for work, there was this little girl, who was wearing make-up (mascara, blush, lip gloss, that we noticed because she started crying) Her mother came over and said "if you don't stop crying and smile in your pictures we aren't going to stop for coffee on the way home".

There is just so much wrong with that IMO.

My FI is a corrections officer at a state prison. It's sad how much his stories sound like these stories.

I would like to apologize. I have an insanely smart-mouthed teenager who was like this as a young child. In our case, I am a fairly strict parent, he is just a really...umm...difficult kid. I was at the school every week during early elementary. I had him with councelers, tutors, behavioral therapists, ADHD specialists...and still he was a little smart @ss to his teachers. I tried to make up for it by volunteering in the classroom, sending treats, making sure they knew that he was in trouble at home for the problems he caused at school...but I am sure they were all starting the day hoping he had the flu.

By Jr High I was introducing myself at the start-of-school meeting as "Hi, I am Corbin, the overbearing mother of the most disruptive student you will ever teach. And I am sorry in advance."

  • After reading these I think maybe I'm glad I didn't get a teaching job after graduation. It makes me crazy that as a teacher you can't teach content, you end up trying to control/modify behavior all day. To all you teachers out there THANK YOU! and I will discipline my child at home so you don't have to do it at school.
