Rant about Delta

Sorry to be so negative.  But I am at a loss of words right now.

I called Delta to find out about checking the car seat at the gate.  The representative and I got on the subject of the peanut allergy since it is in my record for our flight.

She said asking the flight attendant at the gate to not serve peanuts will not work.  They will serve them to everyone except for the three rows ahead and behind us.  Ok, fine.

She then says that if one of those passengers puts up a fight and requests them, then the flight attendant has to give them to the passenger.  Um, ok.

Then she said that they won't land the plane at the nearest airport if there is a reaction.  And that they may deny us boarding if they are concerned about there being a reaction.

Heartless I tell you.

  • what.a.bunch.of.effing.assholes.

I also don't think it would hurt to ask the flight attendant anyway.  You were speaking to some random rep on the phone so the flight crew may be willing to work with you.

    Seriously, AsSholes.

I really hate Delta.  I have found many of their practices to be beyond ridiculous.  I really hope you get a nice gate agent and cooperative flight attendants.

  • I'd like to believe that the flight crew will be understanding and do everything within their power to accommodate Katelyn. Honestly, who could possibly give a $hit about a bag of peanuts when a child's life would be in danger?!
  • That is just redic. So they are saying they won't land the plane if someone is having a severe allergic reaction that could be life threatening? What about if someone was having a heart attack? Both could have the same result! I call BS. Regardless, what an awful policy and a terrible thing to tell you.

And do people really care that much about their lousy bag of peanuts?! Give them pretzels and/or crackers instead. It's not like Delta doesn't have time to prepare for it. Ridiculous stuff like this just blows my mind!

  • That would really piss me off. So they'll give someone a bag of peanuts if they put up a fight? Want to see the fight I'd put up if someone was putting my child in danger for a bag of peanutsAngry

And to have the nerve to tell you that they won't land the plane if she has a reaction. What heartless bastard would let a baby have a horrible reaction and then say, "sorry about your luck, we should be landing in T minus whatever".

Ugh. It really is frustrating that there are people out there who don't give a crap about other people. Very sad.

Sorry you have to deal with such people!

  • Either this representative didn't know what they were talking about or policies have changed. We were on a Delta flight in Oct. 2009 and they refused to serve DH peanuts (his fave) because of an allergy on board.

  • While it's ridiculous that this is their policy, I don't believe this will actually happen on the plane. I think I commented on a previous allergy post about my boss being a giant baby about not getting his peanuts because of an allergy on a recent flight. This was maybe a month or so ago and if I know him at all I am sure he threw a giant stink about not being able to get his beloved peanuts and they flat out refused to give them to him. Hopefully the staff will do the same for Katelyn.

  • I agree that I can't imagine this happening.  We will definitely be asking the flight attendant anyway.  I got a different answer a few months ago when I called and asked the same question.  I just wanted to share how heartless a company/people can be!

  •  As a very frequent flyer, I agree with stillwaiting.  While this maybe their official policy and the representative was not very delicate in explaining it to you.  I have been on a ton of flights where peanuts were not served because of an allergy and I have never seen anyone bat an eye, as who cares about 1 mouthful of peanuts.  Now I might put up a fight if I couldn't have my Biscoff Cookie Embarrassed obviously I am kidding.  Also I have been on a couple of other flights, where there were medical emergencies, ie. heart attack, unconscious passenger and we have landed at the closest available airport that could handle our airplane.

But seriously, talk to the flight attendant as soon as you get on the plane, I would recommend taking advantage of the preboarding with small children so you have some time to discuss it with the flight attendant without holding up the line or other passengers requesting the attention of the flight attendant.   I am almost postive the flight attendent will accommodate you without any questions.  I am sure Delta and the flight attendant would not want to be part of a law suit where a passenger died due to an allergy on their plane bc they served peanuts and wouldn't land.

I agree.  That would be crazy to ever have that happen.

The woman on the phone told me to have Katelyn wear a mask.  Yea, try keeping that on a 17-month old.

Honestly, the more I think about it, I would call back and DEMAND to speak to a supervisor. It's ridiculous that a representative was so dismissive of your needs, and I'm sure that Delta would care to know how this person treated a loyal customer's (understandable) request.

  • Wow, how awful! I am so sorry that things have to been so difficult with Kate's allergies recently (hugs)

Omg, I would have reached through the phone and slapped her.

I can't imagine the flight attendants are going to be as brutally stupid and tactless as that bonehead you talked to. Definitely board early and talk to the attendant PLUS the gate agent. Good luck. And I agree with TTT about calling a higher up. This woman is absurd.

Well, when I asked the question about what they will do if there is a reaction in flight to the woman I was talking to, she said, "Hmm, I don't know.  But now I am so curious.  Let me put you on hold and ask my supervisor."

I was on hold for 12 minutes and 28 seconds.  I timed it.

She came back and said, "I PROMISE I didn't just leave and take a lunch. Hahaha.  I was talking to my supervisor.  She is a great woman, but wow, she can talk your head off.  Anyway, this is what she said.  They will not land a plane for a reaction.  And if they feel there could be a reaction, they will deny you boarding."

So, I guess it came from a supervisor.

  • That is just crap.  I was going to suggest if you had that person's name to call and ask to talk to a supervisor, until I read your last post... I hope they are cooperative with you at the gate!  Where ya going?
