BFing moms: discouraging "snacking"

The past couple days, DS wants to eat constantly. He already went through the 6 week growth spurt, so I don't think that's what this is. Now, he'll nurse for 10-15 minutes (kind of lazily) and then fall asleep. As soon as I try to put him down, he is awake and acting hungry again. He won't take a pacifier. He won't nap for longer than 45 minutes before he's awake and hungry again.

Over the weekend I was pumping a lot and feeding him from a bottle, and he seemed to go for a lot longer between feedings, probably because he was taking more milk at a time. How do I encourage that without the bottle? This is my last week of maternity leave and I have a lot to do at home, and I can't accomplish anything when he's attached to my boob!

Re: BFing moms: discouraging "snacking"

  • I have this same problem! I hope someone has some good tips on how to get them to eat a meal and stop snacking!  I feel like I feed DS all day because he eats a big, gets drowsy (even though I try to keep him awake) and then wants to eat again 20 mins later.  I am lucky if he gets one good nap of over a hour a day.

  • try distractions. or I will jostle her a little bit if she falls a sleep to encourage her to eat more.

I love that both of you have the bumbo shots in your siggy/

  • distract to hold him off for as long as possible.  play on a floor mat...hold him and walk him around talking to him, etc.

If I didn't decide feeding time was over, my baby would eat half-heartedly and be fussy about it all day long.  Sometimes he's not really hungry, he just doesn't know what else to do when he is awake.

  • Definitely try to keep him awake as much as you can while he's eating.  I know that can be hard!  What I generally do is feed on one side for 10-15 minutes, and I'll tickle his feet, talk and sing to him, rub his tummy, etc., to try to keep him awake, and then, when he starts slowing down on the eating or starts to fall asleep, I'll pick him up and burp him, and then I change his diaper so he's nice and awake, and then I feed him the other side.  Then we play for 45 minutes to an hour, and then he goes down for a nap.  We usually have about 2 1/2 - 3 hours between feedings and that really helps.  If he acts fussy and it's been less than 2 hours since his last feeding, try a paci or play with toys or something to hold him off for a little longer, if you can.
