Acne during pregnancy....fact or myth?

Hi- I have suffered with acne my whole life. Ive been going to a RE my whole life and recently my RE told me that the only way to cure my acne for good is to have a baby....is this true? Ive heard that is you suffer from acne before you get pregnant than you wont have acne during your pregnancy and if youve never had acne then you chances of having acne while pregnant are higher...... is there any truth to this? I really fear that my face will be a disaster once we conceive. : (

  • I've never heard of that, but I've never had acne in my life except while I was pregnant. Having a baby to get rid of acne is probably not the way to go though!  Smile

  • Ive had acne before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and after pregnancy. I think some of us are just predisposed to it.  I dont think you are going to find an exact answer.

I had bad acne as a teen. It cleared up for the most part during the pregnancy but is back full force.

Are you asking about pregnancy as a treatment for your acne or are you just concerned about the effects it may have after you get pregnant?

My dermatologist just told me that my birth control pill helped to control my acne pre-preg.  Actually being pregnant was like being on birth control because my hormones didn't fluctuate.  It wasn't until DD was 6 months old that my face started breaking out.  So, pregancy didn't cure it.  Maybe it even caused it.  Who knows.

I've always had super dry skin (think flakes instead of pimples)... now after giving birth, I'm getting monster volcano pimples on my back. Sad And I can't even reach them to pop them myself! Crying

  • That is the strangest thing I've ever heard. I've had acne in some form since I was 11. It got worse in my first trimester and better in 2nd/3rd. Was still clear for the first few months PP and now it's back again. I think every woman is different & acne has a bunch of different causes.

  • I have never had more acne problems than when I'm pregnant.  And since it's hormonal there's no creams, washes, anything that helps it...... it's the worst.  but i usually don't have acne so maybe it'll be the opposite for you!

I've had acne problems all my life.  I am currently pregnant with my second baby.  Both pregnancies I have had bad acne.  I feel like a big, walking, talking pimple.
  • Actually, I think my skin was the clearest while pregnant and breastfeeding, as odd as it sounds. Although, part of me thinks that it was because I had to strictly limit my caffeine intake during those times, and caffeine is said to aggravate acne. So maybe that's why it happened to me.

  • Hi ladies! My hubby and I are ttc either way but ive been going to my RE for acne problems ever since i was 14. When i asked him what would be the cure he said "having a baby". just thought it was odd that he said that cause how could anyone really know? But he guaranteed me that that would be "the cure" for my type of acne....very strange huh?

  • My acne went away during pregnancy.  It's returned very mildly, but not like pre-pregnancy.  It's only been 5 months though, so who knows.
