Pregnant after a Loss

No u/s for all three pregnancies?!

My co-worker told me that she never had a single ultrasound with any of her three pregnancies. I was in shock!

Even if I wasn't PgAL, I don't think I could go my entire pregnancy without an u/s, let alone three!

Did any of your mom's have u/s's during their pregnancy?

  • My mom didn't with me or my older sister - sister is 30 and I'm 28.  She did have maybe 1 or 2 with my sisters, but the technology was very very new at the time (as in a doctor having a machine in house) and she was technically high risk because she was pregnant with multiples - my sisters are 24.

  • My mom had one u/s total for her four pregnancies (3rd was a late loss).  The only u/s was when she was pregnant with my sister, who is now 20- the doctor couldn't find the HB with the doppler at one point during the third tri, so he did a quick u/s.

The image was pretty poor quality as well, which made my parents be team green (even though they didn't want to be). I was either going to be "baby girl" (they couldn't decide on a girl name until I was 5 days old) or a Michael.

It seems like our parents were a lot more zen about the whole PG thing..."meh, we'll figure out her name eventually...everything will be fine"

I don't know if my mom had any ultrasounds, my baby book mentioned that when I came out my dad looked up and said "Its a girl!". So probably not. I am 26 but I don't talk to my mom about anything baby related. With DD, I had 2. With the last I had 3 (most due to see if it was pregressing or not).

  • Depending on when she had her kids, that might be entirely normal.

I don't think routine ultrasound found its way into regular OB practice until the mid-80's at the earliest.  Ultrasound has been around for a while, but until the machinery and techniques were developed that made in-office scans possible, I think they were the exception rather than the rule until the mid-80's.  (any PgAL doctorsor nurses can correct me on this one).

  • Wow! I would go nuts. The only way we found out about the miscarriage was via ultrasound. Who knows how long I would have thought things were fine without an u/s. Baby stopped growing at 6 weeks but by 11 I still had no spotting.

My mom had them, not sure how many, but she had a cyst they were watching so I know she had them very early.

  • I know my mom said she never had an ultrasound with us. She said they were so expensive they only did them when they thought something was wrong. She said they always used the Doppler and then if they heard weird stuff then they would order an u/s. They apparently used that to guess gender too...but we know how accurate that is....I was supposed to be Joseph Michael....my sister was not very happy when I came home instead of the little brother she wanted...lol

  • My mom had an x-ray done in '74 at the end of her pregnancy with my sister which helped them determine she needed a c-section since my sister's head was not going to fit through her pelvis (she had a lot of pain and back problems).  I was shocked it was an x-ray but I guess it's what they did back then.  The hospital was in NYC, so it's not like availability should have been a problem.

Apparently, they had just recently come out with HPTs when my mother had my youngest sister!  (She's 23.)  My mom told me about how it was like doing a chemistry project to get it to work, mixing together a bunch of different vials.  Hee hee.  I guess with me & my middle sister, she just had to wait until a few weeks after she missed AF & then go to the OB for a blood test to find out!  (I believe she was something like 8 weeks before she even knew with me.)  When we told my parents about this pregnancy, I had them on Skype & held up my FRER.  Mom had NO idea of what it was!

And she didn't have an u/s with my youngest sister or my middle sister (31) or me (33).  She told me the same thing:  that u/s technology was still very new & they only did it if they suspected a problem.  Like PPs said, I think it was because they weren't sure how safe it was & wanted to keep exposure to a minimum.  Understandable.

My mother has also been telling me recently about how cool her OB was when she was pregnant with me because he was an older man but was waaaay ahead of his time about so many things.  Like encouraging my mother to BF when everyone was still FFing (AND mixing in cereal...for newborns!) & telling her to not let me sleep on my tummy (when most professionals were recommending that at the time).

It's really fascinating how much has changed in such a short period of time.  Who knows what they'll be doing when we start becoming grandparents!!!

I was born in 87 and my sister in 89 and my mom had ultrasounds with me only because they suspected a heart problem (which corrected itself after a couple weeks of monitoring). She said it was a big deal then to get an ultrasound and they had to go to a certain hospital because not everyone had the u/s machines.

  • My mom had no ultrasounds for any of her 3 kids.  Neither did my older sister; who was having babies all through the 90's.  In my mom's pregnancy with me, going for an ultrasound was a something you did if the doctor suspected something was wrong.  During my sister's, she was un-insured and it was considered a 'luxury'.  I'm 16 weeks pregnant right now, and I've already had 3 ultrasounds and that doesn't include my anatomy scan.
  • I have a family member who refused any ultrasounds through her pregnancy. She gave birth last year, so it's not like the technology didn't exist then. I have no idea how she did it!
  • My mom didn't have any ultrasounds.  I am 38 and I have brothers that are 43 and 48.  I gather they just weren't common back then...
