Alrighty, so Cohen and I are taking a trip in July. He'll be 8 months old. I don't know how big he'll be but I figured I would just wear him in the Ergo and have him on my lap on the flight. Then I started reading around online for some tips (it'll be just us two until we get to our destination) and I read a lot about turbulence, and how it's so much easier to fly with their car seat in a separate seat so they can nap and you can have your space. I am going to buy our plane tickets today, and it isn't any more money to get a separate seat for baby. I might as well do it right? It's a short flight, followed by a short layover, followed by a 5.5. hour flight.
My dilemma is holyshiit carry a car seat around the airport? And a giant carry on/baby-bag/purse combo? I guess I won't be checking a stroller. Too much to carry! I'm looking at this thing:
or one of these, but disliking the price on this one a little more:
Has anybody had experience toting the car seat onto the plane with them? I'd love some tips.
ETA: I know it has to be FAA approved... but that's about all I know about travelling with a car seat.
Re: Flying ... with the car seat. Anybody?
I don't have any tips for you since I haven't flown with DS yet...but I was just wondering what airline you are using that allows your DS to fly for free!?? (Or did I not read your post right?)
ETA: I mean, get his own seat on the plane for free.

It's Frontier Airlines.
I was surprised too! I put in '1' for adult, and then they have infant: lap or seat. and it's the same price when I put either one in. It's craziness!
ETA: carrying his car seat was a biitch. It was me, my mom, and ryan. We had 6 bags, the car seat and the stroller. Toward the end we ended up putting him in the stroller, hooking bags on the back, and rolling the rest/carrying the seat. It was a PITA for sure!
You will of course have to pay for another seat if you use one. When I flew with Remy, he was 3 months. I carried him. And I was fortunate enough to have an extra seat next to me both times. So when Remy napped, I laid him down there. But that is rare and I doubt would happy for you much. Especially if you have lay overs.
ETA : I didn't know Frontier Airlines would let baby fly free!
That's awesome!! Getting that deal kinda makes up for buying one of those carseat tether thingys.

No, but here's my plan haha...
We are flying at the end of May. Baby M will be 9 months. My husband may or may not be going depending on work- however we have had this car seat debate. If my husband doesn't go I'm taking the car seat (we can switch his ticket for the baby). This is what I am planning on doing:
I'll take the baby bjorn, umbrella stroller. back pack with necessities, and car seat. There's assistance at the airport if I need it, but I think I can handle getting from the car thru security to the gate. Once we're at the gate it'll be easy. Check the stroller wear the baby in the bjorn, and load up the car seat. Then we'll be the last to get off the plane, and I'll wear the baby off the plane and dump the car seat in the stroller. I'll ask the flight attendnents for assistance if I need it getting off the plane. When I get to baggage check, I'll rent one of those carts. We're also taking a red eye on a sunday night- less busy airport/traveling day, so I don't think I'll feel rushed. Traveling is a little more complicated with only two hands and a baby! haha :P I'm interested to see what other ppl put!
Just use your regular stroller and check it at the gate. Buy a large backpack and put all of your carryon bags in it so your hands would be free to lug the carseat around. Or....
When my mom used to travel with us kids, she would use this (https://www.amazon.com/Sparco-Easy-Grip-Flip-Out-Platform-Capacity/dp/B000USIM5M/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1305048906&sr=8-2) to cart us around in our car seats. They fold up really small and she would attach our carseats with bungee cords. It may seem bootlegged but it's essentially the same thing as the second link.
When I flew with my DD overseas they took the carseat when I checked in and put it on the plane so I didn't have to worry about lugging it around the airport. You might want to call the airport and check to see if this is possible for you. Oh and a word of advice, make sure that your LO gets a window seat because the carseat will block people from exiting the row into the isle.
Having a seat for my DD was the best thing ever. I was able to put her down in her carseat so she could sleep in there for 4 hours of our trip. It saved my arms and my sanity. I recommend having a seat for your LO.
We are flying with twins next week. We purchased seats for them and are bringing their snugrides. We are going to bring the double city mini, put the snugrides in a large carry bag that I bought from diapers.com and hang the seats from the stroller handle. When we get to the gate, we will switch the boys into the snugrides, fold up the stroller in the large carry bag and gate check it. That way we can also use our snugrides for the rental car as well as the airplane seats.
We also have the larger convertable carseats but figure it would be easier to cart around the snugrides then the convertibles. This is probably the only time we will be able to get away with the infant seats though.
