October 2011 Moms

Religion politics and vaccinating?...

I think that vaccinating should be added to list of things you dont discuss. Anyone else see the debate a troll started yesterday on this issue? It just makes me appreciate our peaceful October 2011 board that much more no unnecessary drama:)

Re: Religion politics and vaccinating?...

  • And maybe throw circumcision in there while you are at it.

  • the vaccinating is totally different, imo.  First of all, there's no good reason not to vaccinate.  That whole thing is a hoax, the evidence just isn't there.  Unlike religion or circumcision, where there are good reasons for both sides.

Second, the main problem, if YOU don't get your child vaccinated, it has seriously negative implications for MY CHILD (i.e. it could die.)  This is totally different than what you decide to do with your son's foreskin.

This. Vaccinating shouldn't even be a debate, it's a matter of worldwide public health.
  • Seriously. It has gotten out of control. It wasn't just one post, either. The threads just keep coming.

My point is this: getting people riled up about an issue that simply comes down to persona preference is one thing. I totally agree with you that these posts are annoying and should stop (but it's the bump, so I'm not expecting reason and levelheadedness to prevail.)  They take up too much time and space, and hormonal pregnant ladies are easy bait for emotional debates that have no possible resolution.

Vaccination does not fall into this camp, so I don't think it should be on your list of topics that ought not to be posted about because it's just shitstirring.  If women really want to know about the truth about vaccination, this might be a good place for them to find out.

  • Ok seriously this was intended  as a light hearted post joking post. Why must everyone state there OPINION on this? It  for both sides its still a choice meaning its not illegal either way so NO ONE is right or wrong. So why discuss it? This bump battle is not going to change anyones mind. Like I said I love how this board is not a drama filled board. Why make it that way?
  • I agree with others...just keep this debate off the board. We all need to do what we think is best for our own children. It's like the breastfeeding/formula feeding debates. Each mom has to do what she thinks is best for her and her child.

I like the October board because usually it is free of these debates.

While religion plays a part in the legality, in most public schools your child is not allowed to attend unless they have been vaccinated and from my experience as a former teacher too many parents attempt to pull the religion card when it does not apply to them.

Im not disagreeing with you.  The fact that people dont vaccinate boggles my mind, but my problem with the posts are that they are very rarely started by a well-intentioned new mother trying to decide what is best for their child.  They are almost always started by a troll/anti-vaccination conspiracy theorist.

I have been on these boards for what feels like forever, and as far as lumping it in with the other things (religion. politics, etc) I am pretty sure all anyone meant is that for whatever reason, it is one of those debates that will continue to hang around.

I dont think anyone was/is trying to downplay the importance of vaccination, I think it is just that people are flat out tired of the huge drama that it stirs up.

Like I said, Im not disagreeing with your view on the importance of vaccines, they save lives...no debate.

This. I in no way  was saying anything about religion being why some choose not to vaccinate there babies. I dont see how the two could go hand in hand. I was making the comparison to the fact its common knowledge those are things you dont bring up or talk about. Did anyone see the screen name of the person who started this all yesterday? The screen name was Judgingyou.... That troll is so happy with what they started. I dont understand why everyone is feeding into it so much. If you look into some of the things they say to woman who are grieving its disgusting! So why make it fun for them to come to these boards? I think everyone knows this was a light hearted post...why make anything else out of it? If there is a new mom who comes here and is not sure what she wants to do she should feel comfortable to ask a question be shown facts and make her decision. Everyone on here has the same goal a happy healthy child and yes there is a huge difference of opinion. But that is every parents choice to make. And bump arguments like this accomplish nothing.

Though I'm caught up on my vax now and intend to vax our kids...I was one of the kids that legitimately used the "religion card" when in elementary & high school.

It bothers me to hear people abuse that exemption.  There really are religions where it goes against their beliefs.

  • Debate does not = Drama. Yes, if a troll is just stirring the pot, it's drama, but that could be on any subject. I see no reason why all topics can't be discussed here. Friendly debate is not a bad thing. If no one can voice their opinion unless it's agreeing, then the board gets boring pretty fast.

This all the way. I have seen many hot button issues discussed in an intelligent and well thought manner by both sides on this board, but I have also seen people throw out crazy things and become argumentative over dumb things.
