Anyone else planning on making their own baby food?

DH loves to cook, and he's really great at making soups from scratch. But he was against making our own food, UNTIL we went to BRU and he looked at the ingredients on the organic baby food jars. So now he's interested.  We have a mini (4 cup) food processor and an immersion blender, but I'm thinking I should register for a baby food processor.  Can anyone recommend a good one?

Re: Anyone else planning on making their own baby food?

  • I am planning on it, and I really don't think you need another blending appliance. If you do buy one, I would go with with a regular food processor or a blender; something that you will use in the future. Again, FTM here, but that's just based on what I've heard from other people!

  • I made a lot of mine with DD. You don't need to buy anything special, a regular pot, food processor or immersion blender, and some storage device will do the trick. Keeping in mind some first foods don't have to be cooked and a lot can be mashed with just a fork. i.e. bananas, avocado, cooked sweet potatoes, cooked acorn squash...

I had silicone ice trays that were two oz, so after a day of freezing would pop them out and store a bunch of little food blocks in a freezer bag - they last for 3 months. I work FT so I would just do a bunch on the weekend and not have to worry about it for a while.

It's up to you how fancy you want to get though.

you don't need anything special to make their food. a mini food processor is the same thing as a "baby food processor", it's just less cutesy.

  • you don't need any other gadgets than what you've got already.  it's SO easy to make your own and it's so much cheaper as well.

all you need is a blender/food processor  and some ice cube trays to freeze the purees in, then pop them out into a gallon sized ziploc bag for long term storage.

SUPER easy. you can cook the veggies any way you like, roasted or steamed, puree and freeze.  it's seriously as easy as that!

you may have to add a little water to thin it out but that's it!

  • i'm going to try to make mine but i don't know how long it will last......if i am a SAHM, probably longer

I did with DS, and will again. Those "fancy" baby gadgets for making food are SO unnecessary. i used a steamer, and blender. My blender no longer works, but I have a magic bullet that I will use instead. I just pour the puree into an ice cube tray to freeze into individual portion sizes, and then when frozen, put them in a ziploc. Easy peasy.

  • We are making our own because I have a couple of diseases that react to certain foods so after making a diet change for myself we couldn't believe what was in alot of the foods. Plus baby food is expensive for one jar that you don't always use up in it's entirety.

We have a couple that makes their own. As pp stated they freeze them in ice cube trays and then transfer the cubes to freezer bags. Super easy and we plan on using our blender, it has multiple settings so I don't see the need for a "specialty" blender/processor.

I figure as the baby gets older we will puree less and the other setting with make better "stage" foods. You ever smell stage 3 baby foods. UGGGGHHHH even the spaghetti smells gross LOL.

  • I was just planning to use a regular food processor. There is a great website www.wholesomebabyfood.com that I found a lot of helpful info and recipes on.

  • We used a mini food processor to make DS babyfood. You will not need a baby food processor.

If you register for anything, register for the special trays to freeze the food in and the storage cups to store the food in. You have to remember that you will need a way to store and carry the food with you when you leave the house(one thing I didn't think of at first).

Making baby food is very easy and actually doesn't require all the special equipment that they will try to sell you. With DS, I used a steamer that came with my pots and pans or the microwave, a mini food processor and ice cube trays. I had the Breast Flow bottle and they come with lids for the bottles to store breastmilk, so I just used those as our storage containers for going out.

  • DH made all of DD's baby food and will likely do the same with this one.  We received a Beaba as a gift and he liked using it when making small batches.  However, he liked to make large batches of different foods and then keep them frozen.  For that he just used our regular kitchen equipment (food processor, etc).
  • We plan to.  Any kind of "baby food makers" are a waste of money though, its the same damn thing as using regular food processor and steamer, it's just more money because it says "baby" on it.  I plan to store it in ice cube trays.

  • I'm planning on it! My mom's going to show me how -- my grandmother made hers and taught her how to make it for me. I think we're going to do it the old fashioned way with a food processor, a strainer, and ice cube trays :)

I'm planning on it! My mom already got me a baby food cook book, I'm really excited. I registered for the Beaba. If I don't get it I will probably just invest in a good food processor since I don't have one.

  • I am and my mom has told me how she made baby food for me and my sister by just using a blender and steamer. I want to buy a magic bullet for the easy use of it but I already have a blender so I may not.

  • I made all of DD's puree myself and am planning on doing it again this time around. I have the Beaba Babycook and I LOVE it. Some people told me it was just a glorified food processor, but I disagree. It is fairly compact, so I didn't mind just leaving it out on the counter. And since it cooks and purees food, it meant less dish washing for me, and THAT I really liked, too.

The only thing I might not do is apple and other "basic fruit" such as peach, pear, or berries. It's not worth it when Mott's (and generic brands) make "nothing but fruit" purees for less than it costs to make my own.

    this exactly.

https://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/ was a great tool to use on recipes and just "how to" .  We borrowed my parents food processor and made big batches on Sundays to freeze in ice cube trays.  my stock pile at one point was HUGE; took all the space in the garage freezer :)   But check out that website; tons of great info!

  • Thanks so much, ladies!  I may just go ahead and register for the special trays and containers and hold off on the specialty processor.  For those that mentioned the Magic Bullet, have you heard there's now the Baby Bullet?  You can only order it through their site, and weirdly, when you buy one you get one free.  Because you need two Bullets?
  • we're doing baby led weaning this time, so no purees.

But I made a lot of DD1's food, and just used our magic bullet. We just got rid of that in favor of the ninja, so if we do need to puree anything, we'll use that.

This is no longer true.  I got one at BUY BUY BABY last weekend because I had a coupon.  It was $50 and I think it'll be worth it.  It's adorable.  I have a blender, but it's a really crappy one that I've had since college, so I think it's time to update.

I saved the receipt in case someone buys it for my shower.  Most people know that I LOVE to cook, so I'm thinking someone might get it for me even though I'm not registered for it.

I toyed with the idea.  When I told my mom I thought that would be a good way to cut down on costs, she burst into laughter.  Apparently, she tried making her own baby food for about a week before she realized it was completely unpractical.

If your hubby is going to be doing all the food prep, I'd say go for it!  But I'm a single mom and will be working full-time after a measly 6 weeks of maternity leave; I know for a fact that I will not have the energy or motivation to blend food, wash blender parts, store, clean up, etc.  Simply finding time for a shower will be challenging enough.
