2nd Trimester

Wanted to cut my.... off

I literally fell out of bed last night with a cramp up my entire leg. I have never experienced such pain in my life. Omg I felt like such a baby. I read a few posts below about pickle juice but does that prevent it or stop it while it's happening? Are the rest of you getting these charlie horses? I really wanted to cut my leg off last night just to stop the pain. Ughh.

  • Bananas, like PP said!  I used to get this constantly, my doctor said it was from a combination of dehydration and low potassium.

Potassium is supposed to help, but when you are pregnant I think charlie horses are just a part of life. I get them in my feet really bad :(  I hate them!!

  • Try calcium, drinking a glass of milk before bed.  My midwife says its not a potassium issue rather a calcium problem.

  • I had them frequently with my first son.  I found if I ate a banana before bed, I didn't get them.

Also when it is going on, if you can get to a bathroom (or wherever with a cool tile floor) standing on that seemed to help me.

  • Usually cramps are a sign of your body needing magnesium. Maybe stock up on that?

  • This totally happened to me last night too...in my calf! I think mine was due to exercise and not enough water though, because I know I had plenty of potassium and calcium yesterday.

  • I used to be a runner and had that problem a lot. It was because I over worked the muscles or was really dehydrated. I haven't really heard of the potassium and calcium problems but those are good things to have since our bodies need them more than ever now. Good luck with the charlies. Hope something works out for you!!!

  • I used to get them early on in my pregnancy and I started taking in more calcium and that helped make them go away and unless I miss 2 days of prenatal vitamins then I get small ones that don't last long and are not nearly intense!! Hope it helps for you because it sure worked for me!
