2nd Trimester

Awful Cold Sore! :( what to do?

I have the worst cold sore on my bottom lip and it is KILLING ME!  Can I take Abreva? I'm going to call my doc in a second and see and hopefully one of the nurses can call me back promptly!

Are there any home remedies that you can suggest?  I've heard conflicting things about rubbing alcohol, even though, I've done it a couple of time and it definitely seems to dry it up.

It is miserable - I'm a teacher - so, of course, I'm having to move my mouth all day long!

 Thanks!

  • Oh eww. I hope you don't plan on kissing your baby and passing your herpes onto it.

  • Ah bummer, I hate cold sores!!

I thought I read somewhere that you could use Abreeva... but I could be wrong.

  • I had one in first tri, and it sucked! I just kept vaseline on it to keep it from cracking all the time. I hope yours clears up soon!

  • I have never had a cold sore before and got one in the 1st tri and it sucked. I used abreva on it.

Try Campho Phenique. I think it works really well. I used to get cold sores during my menstrual cycle and this stuff worked the best for me.

  • I hadn't had one in years, but around 16 weeks I got a hellacious one. A nurse told me it was okay to use topical L-Lysine. It went away in 4-5 days with that and carmex on it constantly. good luck getting rid of it quick, they're no fun :(

  • You can use Abreva and prescription Valtrex or Acyclovir (generic).

Valtrex is the way to go!  it's a prescription from your doc and ok'd during pregnancy.
