October 2011 Moms

Edit; 2nd time moms what goes in a hospital bag?

I am a first time mom and I am scheduled to have 2 C-sections this pregnancy.  I leave Wednesday for Philadelphia  (from Detroit) so I have no idea what I will need or want in the hospital so could any of you please give me some tips

We are having surgery in utero for the baby spina bifida. The surgery for me is basically a C-section. and Because of the surgery when I am  37 weeks I will have to have a C-section because I will no longer be able to have a baby vaginally. So yes for me it equals 2 C-sections 1 baby

  • I LOVED my body pillow (but it won't fit in a bag). It made that bed so much more comfortable.

I liked having my own shampoos and smelly stuff.

    Everything else is gravy.

    Ditto... What?!

Hospital bag... Boppy pillow or similar, nursing cover if you're shy, blankets for baby, diapers, wipes, gigantic pads, baby outfit, baby socks, baby hat, (remember the car seat), an extra outfit for mom to leave for home with... something like sweats and a maternity tee that you don't mind bleeding on, a couple of pairs of socks for mom, hair brush for mom, hair brush for baby, little nail clippers for baby or glove covers for baby, suckers or lollipops and gums for mom during labor, any thing to make labor easier... pictures, music, crossword puzzles.. whatever you can think of really. Google the phrase and you'll come up with lists others have come up with.

  • to add to previous list, some slippers for walking around hospital floor and comfy loose sweat pants/yoga pants for going home. You will be wearing a huge pad and will not want to wear anything tight. Also, I made sure to have regular brief undies (granny panties) at home for after the mesh undies. Bikini underwear will hit you right at the incision spot, so that is uncomfortable. The taller rise undies will really help. rubberband for hair, chapstick, your own shampoo and conditioner, bring 2 OUTFITS for baby --1 larger and 1 smaller--you never know exactly how big your baby will be. My hospital supplied all the diapers, wipes and ointments we needed and sent us home with a bunch. I brought a cloth foldable bag to take home all of the extra supplies we didn't use.your own pillow might be nice, but I also threw it away after being at the hospital for a few days.

  • Just wanted to add...

I work in a hospital and alot of moms forget flip flops for the shower.  This way your feet don't touch the yucky floor

    HTH and good luck!!

  • You might need to check with your hosp., but most hospitals provide diapers while you are there, as well as the giant pads for you, which will cut down on the amount of stuff you need.

My essentials were my slippers, bathrobe, clean dry nursing bras, and  CHAPSTICK! It was so dry in there!

I brought full size toiletries last time and will be getting travel size to save space.  My bag was rediculously big.  I liked having a change of clothes, made me feel more human and less sickly.  Plus, those breastfeeding gowns make it easy to flash someone! ; )  Definitely boppy.  I would think it'd be nice, even if you weren't planning on breastfeeding, extra arm support.

  • I might be repeating but I will just put what I brought.

For mom: nightgowns ( a few in case they get stained), sweat pants, t-shirts, granny panties (I hate the mesh undies), slippers, flip flops, shampoo, conditioner, soap, hair brush, hair ties, bobby pins, gel or hair spray, face wash, toothbrush/toothpaste, a comfy outfit to go home in, socks, lotion, chapstick, if you prefer your own towel and washcloth, breast pads, robe, deodorant, maxi pads, razor

For baby: diapers, wipes, binky, receiving blanket, socks, hat, onesies, outfit to go home in, 1 or 2 sleepers, heavy blanket ( if it's cool), carseat, nail clippers, mittens (to keep from scratching), booties, diaper cream

I prefer my own stuff over the hospitals and I over pack like crazy!

  • I actually didn't bleed much with my c-section, so I would bring some pads from home that are more comfortable than the industrial size they give you in the hospital.  You might need the big ones, but in case you don't you'll be glad to have them.  My bag looked much like what I brought to the gym for morning workouts when I would have to shower and go directly to work. Flip flops, makeup for some decent pictures, hair ties, etc.  I was just so sorry I didn't pack more of my own underwear, pads, and clothes.  I was in for 5 days and just yoga pants and a t-shirt made me feel so much better.

  • Something to do.  I couldn't sleep after DD was born and I was stuck in bed for the first 24 hours. DH brought me my favorite show on DVD and a laptop to watch it on.

There were periods when DD and DH were both asleep and I was wide awake but to high on having a baby to sleep.  The tv was helpful.

Bring snacks for your DH.  Lots of hospitals only have food for moms not for dads and hospital cafterias are expensive.

You may want to check with your hospital, but my hospital provided my baby with everything but going home outfit and carseat.  For me, they covered a lot of "new mom toiletries"- giant pads, mesh panties (they also gave me a bunch to take home- I preferred these since it didn't irritate my incision), nursing pads, some samples of lanolin, soothing gel nursing pads.

For what to bring- crummy flip flops (for shower) and a pair of cheap slippers you can throw away when you leave (I wore my good ones and the first time I stood up bled EVERYWHERE- blood running down my legs, a trail of blood to the bathroom, I was terrified but the nurses assured me it was normal- so my good slippers were ruined).  I liked having my own pillow from home for the bed.  Boppy, and bathrobe (again nothing you don't mind bleeding on).

  • I actually used socks instead of slippers for the actual labor part.  I didn't want to deal with trying to get my feet into slippers for that...seemed like too much work.

The first c-section will be different since baby will still be in your belly...so just need to worry about stuff for you, right?  The shower shoes are a must.  I also brought my own pillows for post-baby (in your case post surgery).  I sleep better with my pillow set up.  :)  Bring books and snacks...chapstick/blistex is also a good call.  And bring change for the vending machine!  That and comfy, roomy, lounging clothes and you should be good to go.

Totally agree, and I got real OCD and had my DH bring a bottle of alcohol and I had to swab down everything I would touch. I am a germaphobe!  I had most of the toiletries from the hosp but food was important...I was always hungry & without the baby to entertain you(like when you deliver) ...bring a book or something too! Good luck and keep us posted! You will definitely be in our thoughts and prayers!

  • after my c/s the drugs made me extremely itchy. Lotion was a must. I had H rub my legs down so I wouldn't scratch them raw. Drugs also made me hot, so we had a small handheld fan.
