I'm breaking up with....

my boobs! I swear they have been nothing but a pain in the a$$ these past 5 weeks. Sure I got the normal pains and soreness that comes with Bfing. Then I get mastitis, but of course that isn't enough for my boobs. Now they have a yeast infection. But again they aren't happy with just that. I got a blister on both! Yep, both nips and the scabs keeping coming off when Colton nurses. So what happens then, yep.... they bleed and Colton spits up blood. My LC told me to pump and feed him that way for 24 hours so I did that Thursday/Friday (BTW- I give props to EPers, what a pain!!). I thought they were healing, but of course this morning, Colton spit up more blood. I gave him a bottle of BM and pumped this morning and got 8oz! I just pumped a little bit ago and it was hard to even get 3.5oz. So, yea, I am completely over my boobs and would like to break up with them and get new ones so I can nurse Colton without being in pain or him spitting up blood. I've called the LC again to see what I can do to help my nips heal and I guess I will just continue to pump (ugh!)

Sorry, just had to vent! I wish my girls would get with the program!

  • I'm with you on that one. My LC has had me pumping for almost a week now and I hate it. Breastfeeding in general has been such a miserable experience for me that I take it one day at a time and have had to adopt a "I can quit anytime" mentality in order to continue with it.

  • Hey, I am mostly a lurker around here, but I am in the same boat, i was cracked and bleeding, then got mastitis, and now I am waiting for my husband to pick up my script for diflucan for the lovely thrush that I developed over the weekend.  I wanted to suggest asking your OB for a script for All Purpose Nipple Ointment, my LC recommended it to me, and it healed my cracked and bleeding nipples in about 36 hours- while I was still nursing.  It has an antibiotic and an antifungal in it, and it worked 1000 times better than any of the over the counter nipple creams.

My LC also suggested vingar rinses on my nipples and also taking acidopholis to help prevent reoccurances

Good Luck, i feel your pain, I told my husband last night, that if I wasnt so committed to making sure my little one got breast milk, i would have given up two weeks ago when i got the mastitis...

  • Huge hugs to you. It DOES get easier, I promise. I struggled with thrush for months with DS, and had mastitis twice (once on top of thrush and a nipple infection). This time I've had mastitis, have thrush, and had cracked bleeding nips so DD spit up blood as well. Have you tried a nipple shield? I got some at BRU that helped immensely when my nips just needed to heal.

  • I'm so so sorry! That sounds awful, ya know what... I was not breastfed as a baby and I grew up to be a perfectly fine human being. Formula isn't the enemy. I'm so impressed you haven't given up already. Big hug for you :o)
  • sending hugs and support, you can do it!!
  • Thanks everyone! It helps to know that I'm not alone, not that I wish any of these issues on anyone. I haven't used a nipple shield, but if this happens again I definitely will. It's just frustrating because it is one thing after another. I'm just glad that my nips are finally starting to feel better after being on the diflucan for a few days. I'm hoping that this will be the end of my BFing issues, but I won't hold my breath. Indifferent

I know switching to formula wouldn't be the end of the world, but I'm to darn stubborn for that right now. I told hubby that as long as I have milk, Colton is going to get it.

I applaud you for not giving up.  I have known many friends who have given up with just sore nipples.  You are an amazing mother.  Good luck and I hope this is the end of it all.

  • I also suggest using olive oil vs. the lanolin it helped WAY much more when I was going through cracking & bleeding in the beginning.

I keep giving myself a "one more week" deadline and I am so stubborn... when I get there, even though I inevitably end up dealing with some other breastfeeding issue, I keep pushing through. I've been on the verge of quitting so many times I can't count. And there have been SO many tears shed (mine and hers out of frustration), I'm surprised I am still fighting for this. Hoping the 6 week mark is some magical turnaround Crying

I'm hoping for the same 6 week miracle! I hope it gets easier for you!

  • I had a similar experience at the beginning..hang in there it does get better. I would say to help heal your nips faster you should air them out as much as possible. I would sit for like 20 minutes after every feeding braless. If the lanolin isn't working my LC told me to mix equal parts cortisone, polysporin, and lotrimin and put that on after every feeding..and it is fine for the baby so don't worry about that. GL and don't give up..you can do this!!!

  • Dang, WTF, after 1 week of pumping and my nipples looking somewhat healed and infection mostly gone, one of them is bleeding again. I don't get it, I'm not pumping any differently. Why couldn't I be one of those women for whom Breastfeeding comes more naturally. Ugh.
