Parenting after 35

Help for a friend

So.. I need to pick your brains, ladies.

My neighbor just got out of the hospital yesterday.. she's 8 mo. preg with #2 and is borderline pre-e.   She had it with her first as well, but this time she's been ordered on bedrest with a month to go.

So.. I plan to try and help her out with her 5 year old boy, especially when he's done with school in a few weeks.  He's pretty self-entertaining, but I know nothing about entertaining a 5 year old.

Not planning to take him anywhere in the car, since that involves moving car seats to my vehicle, etc.  Plus, he really doesn't know me all that well, so I'm a bit of a stranger right now.

I do plan to let him try out the used bicycle that we have in our basement that is still too big for Charlie this season.  So we'll probably do some biking/walking in the neighborhood.

Any other ideas for outdoor fun??  I just want to get the kid out of the house so Mommy can sleep/read/knit and try to relax.  She's prone to depression and already a wreck over all of this.

  • Oh that is so nice of you. Get some sidewalk chalk if you have a blacktop driveway. If it's warm enough, some water toy. We have a water table. If you don't have it, totally worth the money, Charlie will love it too.

    That's very nice of you!

I think the bike and walks will be nice. Maybe also kicking around a soccer ball or throwing a softball, and a kiddie pool when it's warmer.

  • Awww...that's very nice of you.  What about getting some chalk and letting him use it on the drive way...that should keep him busy for a long time.  how about something craft... making something for his mom.

  • Ditto the water toys. Also, cardboard boxes, hot wheels cars, and markers. At that age L loved to make forts and pretend cities and would play like that for hours. The hot wheels will always be used by someone (my girls love them too), and they aren't expensive.

  • Love those ideas, especially the chalk!   I also talked to a neighbor across the street who doesn't actually know this family, but she has a 6 year old and now plans to go to their house, introduce herself and invite Karson over for play dates with her son.

We live in a pretty enclosed area of about 100 houses, 95% of which have kids under age 10.  So I think if we pass the word around, we should be able to keep Karson out of his mom's hair for a month!

FYI--Just got home from Michaels & bought her a big skein of yarn.  She told me she wants to knit another baby blanket and was going to send her husband to the store to pick something out.  That should cure some boredom!

  • If you don't mind buying something you could get him a Stomp Rocket - little boys LOVE it.  Should buy you several hours of time - especially if he doesn't already have one.  Link below should work, if not - go to Fat Brain Toys.  PP had great ideas too.
