My DH works ALL THE TIME! I am so afraid that I'm going to go into labor while home alone with my 4 year old DS. (The other thing is that I'm starting to slow down a bit and would love the luxury of having DH at home more in evenings to help with dinner/bathtime/etc.) Luckily, with my first labor, I went into labor around 5 a.m. so DH was at home. There's no way of predicting, so I guess I just have to not worry and make sure I call/text him as soon as I think I might be in labor. I have a doula, but she doesn't live that close (at least 45-50 minutes' drive away). If your DH is away from home a lot, what is your plan?
Re: Are You At Home Alone A Lot?
My DH travels and is sometimes up to 15 hours away. We are planning on him working from home once I hit 38 weeks, but I'm still freaking out about it. He doesn't always keep his promises to me when it comes to work... I'm just praying it all works out. And all of our friends are on standby to be there if he is away or running late.
Same here about promises when it comes to work. My DH has become a workaholic. He wasn't that way when I met him because he was in a field he didn't care much about, but now that he has his dream job, he is so addicted! *sigh* Oh well, I'm glad he is employed.
Well only on the weekends but I have a good thing that my husband only works 5 minutes from home, its just getting a hold of him if I need him because he works in retail. or if something happens and I can't get to a phone....
the thought scares me.
My DH works on the road so I never know exactly where he'll be nor if he'll be able to answer the phone when I call...
I do worry about going into labour because no matter where he is the drive home is at least 30 minutes and the hospital is another 30 minutes from here...
Mondays I know my neighbour (DHs best friend) doesn't work so at least I can call him up if needed...but aside from nobody is less than half and hour away to come get me...I'm assuming that if labour seems to be coming I'll call my mum asap to come over and let DH know that it might be "the day"...
worst case scenario if I am one of those people that goes from 0 to push really fast I'll just have to call for an ambulance...
DH works 15 mins from where we live but yes he does work alot. He usually only gets a day off a week. I'm at home with my DS alone all day too. We were supposed to start expecting weekly houseguests to come stay with me and DS during the day so that I have A-someone to watch DS and B- Someone to drive me to the hospital if I go into labor. But it doesnt look like that plan is going to work after all!
DH told me to call as soon as I'm sure I'm in labor because he will need some time to finish up whatever he is working on before he can up and leave work. His work already knows that I'm due in the next month.
dh works 50miles away from our house, my doctor and the hospital i'm going to deliver at are 30miles from my house
since we only have on car, dh has to take it to work everyday
if i were to go into labor, with my cs history, i'd have to call an ambulance to take me 20miles to the nearest hospital because there's no way i could wait an hour for dh to drive home, and then drive 45mins to my hospital
i'd also have no one to take my kids. we moved to az in sept and haven't met anyone around here yet...
but that all changes after this weekend!
we're moving closer to dh's work, we'll only be 15mins from his office and 25mins away from my hospital... thank god! i was getting nervous!

DH is an irrigation specialist, averaging about 65-75 hrs/wk..so he's pretty busy this time of year. My parents live within 10 minutes, so they're the back up plan if DH isn't around.
DH and I also work opposite schedules during the week, but have weekends off together. I get home from school around 3:30 and he goes in to work at 5:45 pm. He gets home between 3 and 4 am. Thankfully he is only 25 minutes from home, and the hospital is 10 minutes further north from our house. His poker room main manager is aware that I could call and he will have to leave asap. I have 3 friends on call-2 for a hospital run and 1 to come and dog sit if need be. I'm nervous that I will go into labor when he is at work, but I know that he will be able to get to me/us in good time.
mine works about 13-14 hr days with 45 minute drive one way...
I am home morning until 11ish at night daily. It sucks pretty bad and sometimes is 6 days a week. My parents can bring me to the hospital if need be though, they live about 12 minutes away and DH can just meet us there..

My husband is a police officer and is gone anywhere from 9-18 hours a day for work, just depends on the day. Also traffic in this area is notoriously bad and he works in the city so if I go into labor during rush hour it could take him at least an hour to get home (once I get someone from their dispatch to find him and he gets out of there) and then it would take us at least an hour to get to the hospital... if there are no accidents or excessive traffic backups. The good side is that everyone at his work knows I'm almost 37 weeks and that he may need to leave at any time if he gets the call.
I'm really hoping that I go into labor at night, after he's home and after rush hour.
Since it's my first which are supposedly slow births I'm not too worried about it. Also, if I can't get a hold of him and feel like I need to go ASAP I was just going to drive myself and have him meet me there but I seem to be way in the minority on that one- is that just me being a naive first timer?
