Vancouver?

Hi all! You were all such a big help with telling me about the Portland area... but we just found out that the way my husband's company will report his income makes it SO much cheaper for us to live in WA (he "works" in a couple of states, but is primarily based out of a home office... so wherever we live, is where he'll pay - or not- pay taxes). We did check with their accounting department, just to make sure...

So, even though we are usually urban dwellers, we are going to be house-hunting (rentals) in Vancouver to save the $10,000/year in taxes.  Problem is - all of my research was for Portland, so I have NO idea where to start looking in Vancouver.  My husband will be out in 2 weeks to look around for a weekend, then I'll visit to first weekend in May.  We are hoping to find a place during one of those two trips.

Our wishlist - easy commuting distance to Portland... nothing too far north.  Good schools, and not too rural.  We don't mind being a bit suburban, but I want to make sure that we have stuff to do/places to shop/etc.  We are looking for a 4 bedroom home for $1500-$2000/month... of course, the cheaper the better :)  Any advice would be great!  Thanks!

Re: Vancouver?

  • I third the rec for East Vancouver. I lived out in the Orchards neighborhood and I loved it, there was a lot of residential development going on when I lived out there (I moved to Hillsboro in Jan 2010). The neighborhoods around downtown Vancouver are kind of questionable. Avoid anything on Fourth Plain Blvd, especially if it's west of the 205.

Camas is pretty far east if your DH is commuting to Downtown Portland, but if you're commuting anyway, the drive is worth it.

The Felida and Salmon Creek areas are more north Vancouver (which I know you don't really want) but the neighborhoods are nicer.

  • Thank you all for your advice!  I'm so anxious for DH to get out there next weekend and start house-hunting for a place for us.  I have found a few in the Fisher's Landing area that look good, and hopefully they are still available when he gets there.  I'm especially excited that the Evergreen School district offers full-day kindergarten.  That has been the norm in Phoenix, and I wasn't excited about switching my son to a half-day program next year! It is all working out :)

  • Thanks to you all for your neighborhood help - my husband just picked out a home in Fisher's Landing, and we're moving in this weekend!  My son and I won't be there permanently until the end of May, but it is SO great to know we have a house in an awesome neighborhood.  Now, on to find a mom's group/playgroup!
  • Hey, I live in Camas/ Prune Hill. I'm also the VP of the Camas/ East Vancouver MOMS Club. If you are interested or need any local recommendation send me a message.
