So frustrated!

NDR: VENT In one of my classes we only have two tests a midterm and a final. Both tests are 100 pts. 30 questions at 3 points each, and then a 10 point essay question. There are 6 chapters on the final from 8 weeks of classes, plus notes and discussion. He ADDS material that isn't in the book into the discussion. I emailed him asking for some guidance as to what may be on the test, because I studied for a week for the midterm and bombed it. He replied saying as an educator he finds it important for us to learn to pick the proper material to study, as we should know what is most important. Okay great, but isn't everything you spend time talking about for 3 hours considered important, and not even a slight review unfair to a student. So now I am spending hours studing material that I subjectively think is the most important, and hope that this time I pick the right material. I'm annoyed and aggravated. I don't know anyone in my class of 14 who got higher than a C on the midterm. It may be in his interest to provide a review, b/c students attempting to guess at the material they find important for 30 questions out of 8 weeks worth of subject matter doesn't seem fair. Maybe I am in the wrong, but it seems crappy as well and i feel jaded VENT OVER. I'm going back to studying.?

Re: So frustrated!

  • That is frustrating.  I always appreciated it when professors guided the class to the topics that were most important.  Could you review your last test and look for patterns? Did he quiz on mostly outside stuff? Stuff that was covered on more than one day? You know, maybe you can sort of read into what he finds most important. Good luck!

  • Hoping the final grades are at least going to be curved? My undergrad econ class was the same way. Mathematically, I ended up with a D. After the grades were curved, I got an A-. In other words: nobody had ANY IDEA what we were supposed to study, and he couldn't flunk half the class...

  • ugh, I HATE when they do that, I'm sorry! good luck!
  • Ugh, ditto what leapgirl said, I had a class like this in college too and it ended up on a huge curve. Hang in there and good luck!
  • I've had classes like that and like everyone else hated it. I really prefer when they at least give some type of review. Just try to focus on what seems to be the most important material and good luck!

  • Does the professor offer a curve? I just finished a course like that and everyone scored rather low on the exam so the professor added points to our score. I know it's stressful but luckily the semester is almost over. Hopefully you'll do well on the exam. Good luck!

  • Grading on a curve would be the great thing to do, but he doesn't. He's just an a$$ and I can't stand him. He offers no guidance on ANYTHING, and doesn't give enough feedback to understand what he wants from you. Once this class is done, the dean will be hearing from me. He's just adjunct faculty anyways. . . but boy is he a prick. You all should read his reviews on ratemyprofessor.com. they hit it right on the nail.
