Help...dogs & new baby

Where can I get information on preparing pets to meet the baby?  Many people have said there's a website where you can get free information including a CD of a crying baby...anyone know which website?

I know you're supposed to bring home a blanket with the baby's scent for the dogs to sniff, start carrying a doll around before the baby is born, and also have Dad or another person bring the baby into the house when he/she first arrives...never the Mom, Mom needs to greet the dogs as normal because she's been away at the hospital.  Any other ideas?

We have two dogs, both 4 years old, a very hyper Brittany Spaniel and a very spoiled, Mama's boy,Shih Tzu.....I don't know which will be worse =)  TIA

  •  i think the 'carrying a doll' thing is complete b.s.   a dog knows something that is real vs. not!

  • I noticed you are in RI..in MA there are several ISIS Maternity stores that offer a class dedicated to bringing home your baby when you have dogs.  I forget the name of it, something clever though.  Might be worth checking out.

  • Our hospital offers a Pet Prep class that we are taking in a few weeks. I will post any helpful tips here after we take the course.
  • my sister was a vet tech for 10 years and the vet always told people to do what you said with blanket before yiou get home. And to make sure the dogs get some excersize and one on one time with someone. If it were me I would let the dogs sniff the carseat when the baby gets home (w/o baby in it) and snif fthe baby a little while you hold him/her. Try to give them some attention, but other than that its a process and Im sure they'll get used to the baby in time--maybe a few wks.

  • I worked at a Humane Society in Florida for a while and they gave out free ?DVD's and pamphlets on that sort of thing. You might wanna call your local humane society to see what they can offer. I'm sure they will be super happy your calling for information on introducing the dogs to the baby rather information on how to put your animals up for adoption..I just let my dog watch the Baby Story shows on TV. lol?
  • i tried a few clips of baby noises on the web.  one of our poor pups got freaked because she could not figure out where the sound was coming from.  so that was the end of that.  we're going to go with letting them smell the babies and their blankets.  i think they'll be alright.
  • Bellini maternity on RT. 2 has doggie prep classes. Also, I borrowed the CD "Preparing Fido" from a friend and it has all sorts of baby noises I plan on playing for my lab over the next couple of weeks.  There is a small but informative section about preparing your dog in What to Expect the First Year. HTH!!
  • Thanks for your help and advice =)  It really helps.  Kristen~
  • You can download a 3 minute audio of a baby crying from www.beprepared.net. (The book is great too- DH actually read AND enjoyed it) The baby crying is a little weird but close enough for the dogs!
  • Ask your question on bigpawsonly.com

Even though you don't have huge dogs, the people are very welcoming. These people are VERY experienced and offer very positive advice. You will get a lot of nice responses and advice.
