Question for those who've had their membranes swept

Okay, it's actually three questions:

1.) What did it feel like?

2.) I've heard that you can have spotting afterwards, but is that all?  Or did you notice any pieces of tissue like you would with a period?  I would imagine you might since the doctor is messing around in that general area.

3.) Did it work for you?  Meaning, did you go into labor afterwards?  If so, how long afterwards?

Re: Question for those who've had their membranes swept

  • 1.) What did it feel like? Like the nurse was trying to reach for my neck. It was the worst pain I had ever felt. I was squeeling and squirming on the table. (Before I birthed the next day-which that was the worst pain ever) I will never do a membrane sweep again.

2.) I've heard that you can have spotting afterwards, but is that all?  Or did you notice any pieces of tissue like you would with a period?  I would imagine you might since the doctor is messing around in that general area. Yes I had spotting, mucous plug came out in chunks by that evening.

3.) Did it work for you?  Meaning, did you go into labor afterwards?  If so, how long afterwards? In the end yes it worked for me. Right after the sweep we had an ultrasound and my amniotic fluid was very low. They told me I needed to head to L&D to be induced. My thought was well if I had known that, I would have never done the sweep. It was all for nothing! Well at the time I thought it was for nothing. I believe it did make me go into spontaneous labor later that evening thus being able to avoid the cervadil. I still needed the pitocin the next morning becasue I was taking forever to progress.

  • I just had mine swept today :D

    1. Didn't hurt - just felt like a normal internal...I didn't even know he stripped my membranes until he told me!

    2. I have not had any spotting or bleeding yet (it has been 2 hours)

    3. I hope I go into labor tonight! lol

  • 1. Hurt pretty good I would say..after I cramped really bad and was just generally sore

     2. Yes I started bleeding during it. I did spot and pass minimal tissue after. Dr said I could spot the rest of the week.

    3. Kinda..I started having contractions thursday night that we could time, actually ended up in OB but  they fizzled out. I woke up having some good ones again and OB just decided to break my water and get things going. I was 3-4 at that point.

    good luck!!

  • 1) I just had it done about 40 minutes ago. It hurt, but I expected it to be worse honestly.

    2) As of right now I feel like I am on my last day of my period. There was blood immediately and there still is a little bit but nothing else yet.

    3) I hope like hell that it works for me. My dr said 60% of women who get it done go into labor within a week. (Honestly thats like saying it might work it might not, as far as i'm concerned lol.)

Tiny, I just read your birth story!  Congratulations...she's adorable :)  That's awesome that the sweeping did help you out.  I guess it works for some women and not for others (like all things pregnancy, right? haha).  If you don't mind my asking, what did your mucous plug look like?  I stalk the toilet lol...

Thanks also to the other two ladies :)  I really appreciate your responses and hearing about your experiences!

  • 1.) Just like all the other internals but I thought my Dr was reaching so far up there that I could feel her knuckles pushing against my bones so that hurt.

2.) Yes I had spotting, almost like a light period.  They said it was my bloody show but it was really mucusy

3.) Yes, I had my Dr's appointment at about 2pm on a Friday and started getting mentraul like cramps over night along with spotting. Then about 7am that Saturday morning I was getting timable contractions. I went into active labor about 4pm and had my baby at 7:49am that Sunday.

  • 1. It didn't hurt me. Maybe a touch uncomfortable, but not at all painful.

    2. I did not have any spotting. I did have quite a lot of uterine tightening the next day that I mistakenly thought was the early part of labor.

    3. No. The doctor did this last Tuesday and no baby yet.

** My OB did stripped my membranes without asking. I was really surprised because I'm going for my second med-free labor. In hindsight I'm not really upset he did it, but I absolutely think a doctor should ask permission first.

Edited: I just realized that I did lose my MP the next night. I honestly didn't put the two events together, but I'm sure the membrane strip led to that ...

  • 1,When someone tell me the membrane strip didn't hurt, I really question what the doc was actually doing!  Internals don't bother me at all but this was like, WHOA, I squirmed and closed my eyes and gripped the table.  Maybe some strip more aggressively.

    2. I had blood that I actually got excited about and came on her and asked if it was bloody show but it went away after a few days.  Pretty sure I lost my entire plug within 2 days.  Now I just get a lot of discharge.  (I got stripped last Thursday)

    3.  No baby yet.  It definitely stirred things for a few days after but she said it can take a few strippings for it actually induce if the body is ready.  I might get it again tomorrow but it was so awful feeling i'm not sure I want to!

  • 1. It wasn't too uncomfortable for me at all, but that may have been the doctor who did it for me? It felt like any normal internal honestly.

    2. I felt some extra pressure in my pelvis and chunks of my mucus plug came out for days afterward, but no spotting.

     3. Nope. Had it done last Wednesday and no baby!

  • Just felt like really strong cramps.

I didn't have any bleeding/spotting or any sort of discharge.

I'm almost 6 days overdue, so no, it did nothing for me this time. With DD, I had it done and had her 2 days later. I think it is just one of those pregnancy/labor things and is different for everyone!
