Swelling Feet?

Hi Ladies,

So that past few weeks my feet have been swelling like crazy and have been very uncomfortable.  I can't fit into any of my shoes these days.  My Dr. on Tues said that I am measuring around 36 weeks so I am sure that has something to do with it.  I am trying to keep my feet up even at work and am drinking at least 64 oz of water.  Is there anything else I can do?

I also do not have preeclampsia; my blood pressure is fine so that is good.

Re: Swelling Feet?

  • During my pregnancy with Lucas I got super swollen (hands and feet).  It was awful.  There really wasn't much I could do after a certain point.  Drinking a lot of fluid and putting them up as much as I could was all I could do to get a tiny bit of relief but the swelling really didn't go down until a week after I gave birth.  :-(  I was stuck wearing only one pair of flip flops for the last 4 weeks!

  • Staying off your feet is probably the best thing you can do. I also wore flip flops the last few weeks, even though it was the middle of Jan.

Just a warning, the swelling doesn't go away immediately after delivery. Maybe like 1-3 weeks after? I was in a bit of shock when I became even more swollen post delivery. But it eventually subsided.

  • I was afraid that you guys might say this.  My hands are swelling too and it feels like I have arthritus in my right hand.  It is really painful.  I am basically living in my flip flops but even those are getting too small.  Only a couple more weeks.  I know I can do this.

    Ditto this.

I also had pain/swelling in my hands.  I thought is was carpel tunnel, but it ended up being the beginnings of "mommy thumb" aka tendinitis.  And the remedy was physical therapy and bracing both wrists which isn't feasible with a newborn! It was really painful while I was at home and didn't go away until I went back to work 3.5mo PP

Hang in there - you CAN do it!

  • Are you drastically limiting your salt intake?  A lot of people are afraid of salt and think it causes swelling, but neweer research suggests that elimination/lack of salt actually can cause swelling (we're actually encouraged to "salt food to taste" in Bradley classes because of this).  I just thought I'd mention it b/c if you're currently trying to eliminate it, you might try adding some salt to your diet and see if it helps.

Good luck, hope it improves, you're doing great!!

  • With my pregnancy with Ryan, my feet and hands swelled SO much.  I was actually told to drink anywhere from 90-120 oz of plain water a day (no soda, coffee, etc).  Eliminate ALL sodium from your diet (read the labels - omg some of the stuff I was eating was LOADED with sodium (ketchup was one of the worst - that and frozen veggies!)

Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

  • I feel your pain! I've been starting to swell over the last couple of weeks and it seems to be getting worse and worse. My feet which are normally a 7-7.5 are now an 8!! This is a pretty big deal for me and now I'm either smashing my feet into smaller shoes or borrowing my dd's shoes. I wish I could wear flip flops but unfortunately I can't while I'm at work Sad

  • I'd get some larger flip flops. I don't know of anything to help the swelling other than keeping your feet up.  I had horrible swelling in my feet and legs towards the end of my pregnancy with DS, lookign forward to it soon here too ; )
