Babies: 3 - 6 Months

nap schedule for 3 m.o--help!!

My Lo is 3 months. up until now i've basically let him sleep when he's tired (which is often!) he has done most of his sleeping in his swing. I'm thinking it's time to get him sleeping in his crib and on more of a nap schedule. I'm afraid if i don't he's going to outgrow his swing and i'm going to have a problem!

He has been cranky in the early evenings lately, so i'm trying to figure out if it is related to his reflux or if he is overtired/needs an earlier bedtime.

I'm not as worried about getting him in the crib but i'm really stumped as far as what type of nap schedule he should be on.

Could any mothers of 3-3.5 month olds tell me what type of napping schedule your baby is on and how you came up with it? Also, what time is bedtime?

We will be starting daycare in about a month so i feel like i need to get this somewhat figured out though i'm sure it will change a little when i'm on a work schedule instead of a staying at home schedule.
thank you!

  • I let Mj set up his own time but he seems to follow roughly the same thing each day. Up at 6:30/7 for a bottle. He sleeps at about 9am until 10 then has another bottle. back down to sleep at 11:00.  He does not sleep too much in the afternoon other than a brief cat nap here and there.

He goes to bed around 9pm and sleeps until 6:30am. He also has a bottle about every 3 hrs while awake.

Hmm ok. What both of you just said sounds like what i've been doing up until now. do you put them in their cribs or they just sleep where they are when they fall asleep?

I just put him in his crib and he slept for about 20 min and he's starting to fuss. I have a feeling if i go put him in his swing he'll take a good nap.

  • Mj sleeps on his tummy time mat or in the swing. He HATES his crib for taking naps, however if he falls asleep in my arms I'll move him in there.  He's a very nosey little guy and needs to be able to see what's going on when he wants to.

  • My LO doesnt nap much at all so Im no help there.  He naps when he is tired.  BUT, when he started getting fussy in the evenings, I started putting him to bed earlier and it worked like a charm.  He now goes down at 7:30 and sleeps until 6am waking once to eat around 2am.  What time is your LO going to bed?

  • DD doesn't have a nap schedule. Sometimes she takes good long naps, sometimes she cat naps, it really just defends on her mood. Our daycare doesn't have a set nap for the kids until they're in the 1 year old room, and even then, they'll adjust it as needed. She usually goes to be between 7-8, but she set that schedule too. If your LO seems cranky and overtired, I would definitely try to put him down earlier for the night, but it's hard at this age to put them on a set schedule.

  • My DS naps when he wants, but his days area also pretty predictable in that he can only stay awake for about 1.5-2 hours at a time before he's ready to nap.  So, we wake up around the same time, eat, and nap around the same time every day.

Our bedtime is between 7-7:30 every night.

Mine is almost exactly this.  We have no "set" nap schedule.  I just read her cues for when she's getting tired and cranky and help her get to sleep.  She fights her daytime naps like crazy.  Though she has no problem putting herself to sleep for bedtime at night.

  • I feel like Oliver naps to make up for the fact that he NEVER slept during the first 2 months. He is 14 weeks.

For the past 5 weeks - Oliver gets 'down' between 5:30-7...(usually around 6ish) and is down (with the exception of getting up to eat-which is still almost every 3 hours but will immediately go back to sleep...) til 5AM. DH is a stay at home dad.

He naps from 6:00AM-6:45AM (He literally is up at 5 b/c he's pooped..no joke)

Naps again somewhere in the 8:30-9 timeframe for about an hour and a half.

Naps again around 11:30 or 12 for about an hour and a half... and SOMETIMES takes a 45 min snoozer in the 3:30 range.

I swear he's sleeping what he SHOULD'VE been sleeping as a NB!
