I just started C25K on Monday so today was training day 2 for me. I am wondering if those who have done it were able to stick with the recommended schedule (I have never been a runner...not even around the block!) and if you did the time based training schedule, how long did it take you to actually run your 5K. My first 5K is in July so I have plenty of time but I am just curious. Any other advice is welcome!
Re: C25K Anyone?
A Pocket Full Of Dinosaurs
I'm currently doing the program as well. I don't have a ton of advice, since I haven't completed it yet, but I can tell you what has been working for me.
I originally started out intending to follow it week by week. For me, I needed to extend week one because I didn't feel I could move onto week two (also did that w/week three). I found the first two weeks to be the hardest but then got into a groove and started to enjoy it. I made it to the first run of Week 5.....and then got sick. I missed a week and got back to it last night. I was sure I wouldn't be able to just pick up where I left off, but much to my surprise, I was! The program is really working to build up my endurance. I'm not watching the distance so much as I am following the time schedule. I have noticed my running pace has definitely picked up, as has my walking pace. A lot of my aches and pains in my knees and my back have gone away as well.
Oh, and the best thing I did? Before I even started, I went and got properly fitted for good running shoes. There's some good discussion forums on coolrunning.com that have been helpful as well. Have fun!!
I just did W3D2 at lunch. This is my first time doing the C25K program. I was never a runner before - had only run in a boot camp class before and a couple of charity 5Ks.
Since I am still in the start of it I don't have much advice personally, but my husband is a runner (several 1/2 marathons under his belt) and these are the tips he gave me that have helped: lots of stretching after each run - especially calves to prevent shin pain, go as slow as you need to when you are getting started, proper running shoes and good socks make a difference.
Also, ask you family to help encourage you. My husband has been my cheerleader and he reminds me when I have a bad run that some days are better than others - you just have to keep doing what you are doing and it will get better.
Good luck to you
I completed C25K last May, and will be starting it all over again soon.
Last time I skipped week one because I was on a time frame (I only had eight weeks until the race I wanted to run). I stuck firm to the schedule, even during vacation. I completed my first 5k race at 29:30 right after I finished the program.
After that I just started running 3-4 miles on a regular basis. I was never a runner before C25K but it turned me into one! I can't wait to start again!
I did this program last year and am thinking of doing it again as a way to ease into running post pregnancy. I did the time based training schedule and ran a 38 min 5K. Not the best time, but I was able to finish and run the whole thing which were my main two goals.
Good luck!
