jaundice at 6 days old

DS really looks jaundice today and he is 6 days old. I plan on calling the pedi first thing tomorrow morning but everything I googled said it would appear in days 2 to 4. Anyone else have experince with jaundice past 4 days?

Re: jaundice at 6 days old

  • Take him outside and sun him!  Our midwife had us "bake" our baby 3 times a day for 10 minutes front and back for her first week of life (we had her at home, so we started this when she was roughly 12hrs old).  I would get him some sun now and call your pedi in the morning.  You might as well do what you can today.

  • My daughter is 9 days old and when we left the hospital (she was 4 days), the Pedi said she had a touch of jaundice (levels were at 5). They recommended that we put her down to a diaper and next to a window for about 20 min a day. Her first check up is end of this week, so hopefully it will have resolved itself by then. According to the doctor, this is very common and nothing to be alarmed about right now. I hope everything w/ your son is okay too! :)

  • I went ahead and called the nurse advice line and they got me an apt with our pedi at 10 tomorrow morning. I feel so much better knowing I will see the dr tomorrow. :)

  • My son had the same issue. At 6 days old he started to get jaundice again. My pedi told me not to sun him outside because the UV rays could be harmful to him but to sun him on the floor in a patch of sunlight. That way the UV rays are filtered out but he still gets the same effect of the light. We have to go in tomorrow and have his blood drawn again to make sure his levels have gone back down.

  • Our sons levels were high when we left the hospital so we had to go back to have them checked when he was 6 days old.  He still looked a little jaundice in the face when he was 6-7 days.  I will say though, when we went for his one week apt, our pedi told us the last place it leaves is the face/ eyes so if you are seeing it in his face and eyes that could mean its leaving his system.

    Are you breastfeeding?

Our little girl was looking really yellow on day 7 so I called our ped and we went in and had her bilirubin tested again--it was 12.8 which was up a little from when we were in the hospital. Dr said this is not alarming at all--breastfed babies sometimes stay jaundiced longer  and can be a little yellow for even a few months. According to the doc breast milk jaundice is harmless and might even help baby brain development.

But call your ped and find out what he/she says!
